An estimated 126,000 nurses are needed immediately to fill current vacancies in our nation's hospitals. Current information projects a need for 800,000 nurses by 2020 to staff hospitals due to the increasing age of the U.S. population.

Meeting today's heightened demand for registered nurses, though, requires not only more RN's but also the right type and educational mix. The demand for nurses prepared in baccalaureate programs has specifically increased.A recent report by the National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice urged that at least two-thirds of the basic nurse workforce hold baccalaureate or higher degrees by 2010. Advancement opportunities are broader for BSN prepared nurses. In fact, many career paths are open only to nurses with bachelor's or advanced degrees. A BSN is usually necessary for administrative positions and is a prerequisite for admission to graduate programs in research, consulting, teaching, advanced practice or clinical specialization.
