Joseph Zupancic is currently a deputy district attorney in Washington County, Pa.
A practicing attorney in Washington County for almost 20 years, Professor Zupancic has had a wide range of experience in different areas of the law. During the course of his legal career, Zupancic has served as a law clerk to a Court of Common Pleas Judge, an associate at one of the largest firms in Washington County, corporate counsel of one of the largest privately held companies in the country, and owner and managerof his own firm for over a decade.
Zupancic’s position in the Washington County District Attorney’s Office is actually the second time that he has worked in that office. In the mid-1990s he worked as an assistant district attorney, as a general trial attorney and as the juvenile court prosecutor. As a trial attorney in that office, he was responsible for running a trial list and trying summary, misdemeanor, felony and homicide cases. Zupancic’s current responsibilities in the District Attorney’s Office include managing the office and running the drug interdiction and drug asset forfeiture efforts of the office.
After graduating from Canon-McMillan High School in 1987, Professor Zupancic attained his bachelor of arts degree from Harvard University with a major in government and minors in economics and philosophy. After graduating cum laude from Harvard in 1991, he attended the University of Pittsburgh, School of Law. He received his Juris Doctor from Pitt in 1994.
Outside of his professional life, Zupancic’s main interest is promoting public education. Since 2007 Zupancic has been a member of the Canon-McMillan School District board of school directors. He also currently serves as the vice president of the board of directors of Intermediate Unit 1. He is also an active member of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA). Currently, Zupancic serves as a regional director of Southwestern Region 3 of the PSBA covering Washington, Westmoreland, Fayette and Greene counties. As a regional director he is also a member of the Regional Director Coordinating Council of the PSBA. From 2012-2013 Zupancic was a member of the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association.
As a member of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association, Zupancic has testified before three committees of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. He has testified concerning real estate tax reassessment and school security issues.
As a member of the Washington County Bar Association, Professor Zupancic has been active in providing continuing legal education seminars on a variety of legal subjects usually focusing on the areas criminal and constitutional law. He has also been very active in the association’s efforts to provide legal education to the general public through free seminars and lectures.
