Carlino spent the first 12 years of her career as a speech-language pathologist. She worked primarily in acute care and rehabilitation with the adult neurogenic population, particularly with those whose communication and swallowing skills were impaired due to traumatic brain injury and stroke. Since she worked in mostly teaching hospitals, she regularly supervised graduate students. In 1999, she was offered the position in the Communication Disorders Department at Cal U. This provided her with an opportunity to share with students in the classroom as well as the clinical setting.

- She also volunteers as a seventh-grade CCD teacher at her church.
In The Classroom
Graduate students spend time and often volunteer to spend their own money to provide quality services to the clients in the University clinic and children in Cal U's on-site preschool. A number of graduate students have volunteered time to provide hearing screenings for Special Olympics athletes.
