Clinical Mental Health Counseling: Careers and Practicum

Practicum and field education are taken near the end of your program. Practicum requires two days per week on site for a minimum of 150 hours. You will be supervised by professionals in your area of interest. Internship experiences require a minimum of 600 hours under the supervision of counselors. This will be arranged in consultation with the internship coordinator.

You must gain, at a minimum, entry level skills in your counseling specialty. Students will successfully complete supervised experiences that provide for the development of counseling skills that total a minimum 750 hours. The clinical experiences provide for the development of counseling skills under supervision. In addition to skill development, the internship is designed to give you the opportunity to learn all aspects of the counselors' work at their site.

Site supervisors are encouraged to give students responsibility appropriate to their level of counseling skills and skills in "learning the job." See the Practicum and Clinical Field Handbook for more information.
