Internship
An internship is required of all graduate students. You'll work with children/adults with physical or mental disabilities in a variety of settings, including inclusive classrooms, special public school classes and classes in residential treatment centers, special schools and hospitals. Opportunities for case conferences, learning seminars and teaching critiques are offered, as well as numerous field experiences to observe successful programs.
Field Experience
We also offer field experience that provides you with the experience of working with various groups of children with physical or mental disabilities, in places such as a public school, institution, sheltered workshop, activity center, summer camp or community MH/MR facility, or by doing a specific piece of research with a particular population of students.
Career Opportunities
The field of special education continues to grow, providing excellent professional career opportunities for today's graduates. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that there will be a 35% increase in the number of jobs available in special education through 2012.
