Cohort Sequencing:

  • DHSc program is a cohort-based 50-credit degree that has a spring matriculation point. 
  • All didactic requirements are 100% online
  • The dissertation phase culminates with an on-campus presentation and defense of research.
  • The 45-credit core will include advanced exercise science, adult learning, leadership, and research coursework.
  • Of those 45 credits, 36 credits will have only doctoral students in the classes, and 9 credits will be comprised of both doctoral and master level students.
  • Courses represented by the PRF course prefix will contain both master and doctoral students.
  • Courses restricted to only DHSc students have a DHS prefix. 
  • The dissertation research phase of the program will comprise 5 credits.

Program Requirements:

  • All doctoral candidates must maintain an overall minimum grade point average of 3.00. 
  • Each course in the curriculum must earn a minimal 2.00 grade. 
  • If a candidate fails a course by earning a grade less than 2.00, the candidate will be able to retake the failed course one time.
  • The candidate will be able to retake up to two courses.
  • Current policies of the Graduate School and Research must be adhered to with respect to repeating a course.
  • After year 2 the student will prepare for the qualifying exams.
  • After the doctoral candidate successfully passes the qualifying examinations the student may enter into the dissertation phase of the program.
  • The dissertation phase of the program spans spring, summer, and fall semesters of year 3.
  • The doctoral candidate will be required to defend and present their research as part of the Department of Exercise Science and Sport Studies Graduation Workshop held annually the Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday prior to graduation in December
  • The candidate will be required to be on campus for the duration of the 3 day workshop
  • If additional time is needed to complete the dissertation phase beyond the year 3 spring, summer, and fall semesters the doctoral candidate can register for DHS 901 (1-3 credits).
  • The dissertation chair will determine the needed credits to complete the dissertation.
