Master of Education: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Education
Classes begin Summer & Fall Semester Annually
The Cal U STEM Ed program seeks to provide experienced educators with the opportunity to: 1. improve curriculum, instruction, assessment and content knowledge in the STEM disciplines and 2. improve teacher leadership skills that can facilitate the transformation of curriculum, instruction and assessment through interactions with colleagues in grade level teams, schools, districts, states and nations.
The ideal candidate for this program is someone who has a passion for helping children learn in the STEM disciplines and an interest in improving their ability to deliver exemplary curriculum, instruction and assessment. Many of the people who have graduated from the STEM ED program are elementary teachers in a self-contained classroom, middle level teachers of science/math or educators from museums, nature centers and other science/environmental education organizations. Many other educators have also used the STEM ED program to further their career goals. Please contact us if you would like to share your experiences and ask questions about whether this program is a good fit for your unique career pathway.
A Cohort of Colleagues
The STEM Ed program employs a cohort model in which a group of people begin courses at the same time and continue through the program together. This fosters the formation of collegial relationships in an online learning community, which supports you as you learn and implement new teaching/leadership strategies. Research on professional development indicates that participation in a supportive community is very important to educator change.
The STEM ED program does not lead to a teacher endorsement/certificate/license. For information about Cal U’s approved initial teacher education programs that lead to a Pennsylvania teacher certificate please follow this link. Past graduates of the STEM ED program with a Pennsylvania Instructional I certificate have successfully applied and been granted a Pennsylvania Instructional II certificate. It is important to note that the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) can change their requirements and interpretations at any time so Cal U can make no predictions about future teacher certificate requirements. Our STEM Ed program’s out-of-state graduates have contacted their Department of Education for information about teacher licensure issues. Cal U will support you with transcripts or other documents in this process.
Cal U’s teacher education programs are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (formerly NCATE). This accreditation assures you that Cal U has implemented and is engaged in a rigorous data-driven evaluation and continuous program improvement process. In addition, the university as a whole is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
