Cal U's Christin Hammel Receives EATA Scholarship

CALIFORNIA, Pa. (February 6, 2002)

Christin Hammel, a Cal U senior from the Province of Saskatchewan, Canada, is the proud recipient of a one-time $1,500 Eastern Athletic Trainers' Association (EATA) scholarship for graduate studies.

Hammel is the Athletic Training student worker for the Cal U Men's Basketball team. She is a member of the Cal U Cross Country and Track and Field team and was once selected as Runner of the Week for the team. She is also the vice president of the Athletic Training Club.

Dr. William Biddington, chairperson for the Department of Health Science and Sports Studies, as well as program director for Graduate Athletic Training, nominated Hammel for the scholarship. Biddington commented that he believed Hammel was an "outstanding candidate" and the "most qualified" for the award. He added, "We're pleased that Christin received this scholarship award, and we are proud that Hammel is continuing our tradition of EATA excellence."

Biddington is currently nominating Hammel for a scholarship given by the National Athletic Trainers' Association, and noted that he would continue to nominate Hammel for awards and scholarships in the future.

Athleticism clearly runs in Hammel's family. Her sister is a renowned ballet, tap and jazz dancer, and her brother plays on a two-tier hockey team.

When Hammel was asked for her reaction to receiving the award, she stated that it was an "unexpected honor." Hammel mentioned that working with her peers at Cal U has been an "interesting and fun" experience.
