Bachelor of Science in Education: Special Education

The Department of Special Education, a nationally recognized program  accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, offers programs that lead to a Pennsylvania Instructional I Teaching Certificate. By completing this program, you will be certified to teach in the following areas in special education: children with low intelligence, learning disabilities, emotional problems and multiple physical disabilities. This certification will cover grades nursery through 12.

In cooperation with the Elementary Education Department, we also offer a dual major in special education/ early childhood education and special education/ elementary education. By choosing one of these dual degrees, you’ll also earn a teaching certification in either early childhood education or elementary education.

Success Stories

According to Brenda DiEugenio (Dual B.S. Special/Elementary Education ’04), student teaching was a very valuable experience. “I had to the opportunity to learn from exceptional teachers, allowing me to gain an understanding of myself as a teacher and my philosophy on teaching.” With in-classroom experience in two local school districts, DiEugenio is now a Special Education Teacher for Agora Cyber Charter School. “I encourage students to be their own strongest advocate. Take time to reflect on and learn from every experience to grow both personally and professionally.”
