VOHP at California University of PA Mission

The mission of the VOHP at California University of PA, in conjunction with the Library of Congress’ American Folklife Center’s  is to capture and preserve a collection of oral histories from local veterans who have participated in or supported one or more of our nation’s conflicts and to archive the oral histories in the Library of Congress’ American Folklife Center’s Veterans History Project database and in a special collection at California University’s Manderino Library.

The mission also includes the provision of related student research and learning opportunities for California University of PA students as well as local, secondary students. The special collection offers research opportunities for faculty, students and others interested in local veterans’ histories.

Project Description

The VOHP at California University of PA is a project where local historians, university students, local high schools students, and volunteer community members interview war veterans and wartime supporters in southwestern Pennsylvania in an effort to understand the impact of military service on local individuals and local history. 

It documents the contributions of civilian volunteers, support staff, and war industry workers as well as the experiences of military personnel from all ranks and all branches of service – the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Coast Guard and Merchant Marines. 

VOHP at California University of PA Participants

The VOHP at California University of PA includes all participants from World War I, World War II, and the Korean, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf Wars – men and women, civilian and military. It documents the contributions of civilian volunteers, support staff, and war industry workers as well as the experiences of military personnel from all ranks and all branches of service – the U.S. Air Force, Army, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Coast Guard and Merchant Marines. 

Veterans History Project Founding Partner

California University is a Veterans History Project Founding Partner, which is a designation for Library of Congress VHP Partners who have been working as a volunteer collecting group from the VHP’s beginning to 2009.
