Academic Probation and Dismissal

Graduate students must maintain at least a 3.00 grade point average (GPA) in graduate courses taken in the degree program. A student receiving a GPA below 3.00 will be placed on academic probation. A student on probation is not eligible for graduate assistantships or the positions of graduate residence hall director, assistant hall director or community assistant. Students placed on academic probation will be given one semester to raise the GPA. If the GPA is still below 3.00 after the probationary period, the dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research, after consultation with the department chair and/or program coordinator, may dismiss the student from the graduate school.

Students receiving a GPA below 2.50 after the probationary period will automatically be dismissed from the Graduate School. Some departments may have additional requirements regarding academic probation and dismissal. Students should consult with their program advisors for specific requirements. Students who have failed to meet the provisions of their admission or those who have fallen below the minimum requirements may be academically dismissed from the University.  Students who have been dismissed may reapply to the program after sitting out one semester.  Readmission into the program is not guaranteed.  Students who are readmitted must work closely with their advisors and the Graduate School to develop a plan of study that focuses on repeating courses with failing grades before moving on in the program.  Graduate students who have been dismissed and wish to be readmitted to another graduate program must reapply to the School of Graduate Studies and Research.

STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN AWARDED A GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP WITH A SEMESTER GPA BELOW 3.00 WILL LOSE THEIR ASSISTANTSHIPS.
