Apply to Graduate
Looking forward to Commencement? Graduation is not automatic. You must apply to graduate. Learn about graduation requirements here, then download an application and submit it by the posted deadline. Your dean's office can answer specific questions.
Become acquainted early with the graduation requirements for your program of study. The time period during which you must apply to graduate is posted on the academic calendar and campus-wide reminders are sent at the start of each semester. All credentials for graduation, including application for teaching certificate and transcripts of credits from other institutions, must be submitted on time. Graduation may be delayed if your record is incomplete.
A minimum of 120 semester credits, including the satisfactory completion of all required courses, is necessary for graduation. Developmental courses do not count toward graduation, although the credits earned in them are used to determine class standing and grade point average (GPA).
Students in all baccalaureate degree programs must complete a minimum of 30 credits of the last 45 credits at California University of Pennsylvania. Candidates for Teacher Education must possess a GPA of 3.0 in their major and overall and must successfully complete student teaching before graduation. An overall GPA of 2.0 is required in most programs of study. Certain other programs may require minimum grades in courses within the major.
All financial obligations to the University must be paid in full before graduation can be approved.
Conferring of Degrees
Degrees are conferred in May, August, and December. However, Commencement is held only twice a year, in May (only May graduates) and in December (August and December graduates). Diplomas and official University transcripts record the date of graduation as the month and year in which the degree was conferred.
Attendance at Commencement exercises is appropriate, unless unusual circumstances warrant graduation in absentia. Candidates for graduation should contact the appropriate dean's office and request permission to be excused from the Commencement ceremony.
Honors at Graduation
Review the undergraduate Honors at Graduation policy.
Because of print deadlines for the Commencement brochure, grade point averages from the semester prior to the last semester are used to determine honors status at Commencement. Those students who meet the requirements after the last semester grades are posted can obtain and wear honor cords, but their names will not be listed in the program. Cords can be obtained at the University Bookstore (at no charge).
Honors cords are given to graduate students who complete their program with a cumulative minimum 3.75 QPA based on the semester prior to graduation. Graduate students will not be recognized in the Commencement program as receiving honors.
