Center for Undergraduate Research

A photo of a student working with a Cal U professor in a chemistry research lab.Students are encouraged to engage in research, scholarship, and creative activities while they pursue their undergraduate degree at Cal U. Such endeavors foster development in a student’s chosen field and help them grow, both academically and professionally, through the experience.

The purpose of the Cal U Center for Undergraduate Research is to:

  • Expand opportunities for students to engage in undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activities,
  • Provide funding and resources for students and their mentors to execute projects and disseminate the results of such projects.

Why conduct undergraduate research?

Research allows you to pursue interests, learn something new, hone problem-solving skills and to challenge yourself in new ways. Some of the many benefits of conducting undergraduate research include:

  • Enhancing your understanding and knowledge of your academic field.
  • Seeking answers to questions of great interest to you.
  • Learning skills in communication (written and oral), critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork and time management.
  • Refining your academic, career and personal goals.
  • Gaining academic credentials that help expand your resume, such as presenting at conferences, publishing and working with a research team.
  • Exploring research techniques.
  • Earning academic credit, scholarships, stipends and/or awards for having conducted research.

Undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activities will help shape a full and well-rounded educational experience during your time at Cal U, and will provide you with a set of skills that fully represents your interests and studies. Your research may even make a lasting contribution to your discipline.

How to get started:

  • Begin to consider topics in areas of interest
  • Talk with professors in the department or discipline of interest
  • Become more familiar with the opportunities available through the Center for Undergraduate Research
