Frequently Asked Questions: Internships

Where do I start if I want to gain experience through an internship?

Contact your faculty advisor to determine your eligibility. Once you know you are eligible, follow the step-by-step process. Contact the Internship Center at or 724-938-1578 if you have any questions.

What is the difference between an internship and a co-op?

Internships are coordinated and supervised by academic departments.

A co-op is coordinated by the Career and Professional Development Center.

Internships can either be paid or unpaid.

A co-op position is always a paid position.

Internships are a for-credit experience.

Co-op students do not receive credit for their work experience.

Why should I do an internship?

  • Internships give you an edge in the job market.
  • Internships prepare you for entering the work force.
  • Internships give resume-building experience and help you relate coursework to practical experience.
  • Internships expose you to real-world problems and issues.
  • Internships give you an opportunity to "test-drive" a career prior to committing to a full-time job.
  • Internships help you cultivate flexibility and creativity.

How do I find an internship

Start with your faculty supervisor. They often have contacts in your field of study. Talk to students or former students who have completed internships or currently work in your field of interest. Talk to your family and friends. They may be able to give you valuable insight and information on leads for internships. The Internship Center also maintains a database of resources and can help you research through the internet, chambers of commerce, Pittsburgh Technology Council, Hire CalYOU and more.

Are internships paid?

Compensation is defined by the employer and intern prior to the start date. The employer has no legal obligation to pay interns.

How many credits do I receive for an internship?

Credits generally range from 3 to 12, subject to program requirements. The number of credits for your internship will be recommended by your department and approved by the dean of your college.
