Plan early! All applicants must meet with the a Cal U/TWC campus liaison at the Internship Center ( prior to completing the application to review the application process, including reviewing drafts of your resume, essay and request statement. Typically, students meet with the liaison at least three times before the application is approved and submitted to the Washington Center.

Application and Deadlines

Start your online application for the Washington Center at Do NOT upload any documents, however, until they have been reviewed and approved by a Cal U/TWC campus liaison.

Deadlines can be found at NOTE:  Security clearance placements with the US. Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, State and others have a six-month early deadline. CNN, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Departments of Commerce and Interior, the White House, and the Diversity Leaders and Women Leaders Programs and other scholarships are highly competitive and require an early application of one month prior to the regular deadline. Check with Cal U's liaison at the Internship Center at regarding the specific program in which you are interested and the appropriate deadline.


A one-page, professional resume is required. Students are encouraged to create their first draft, then visit Career Services, Eberly 230, for a resume review and a mock phone interview. Subsequent drafts will be reviewed by the Cal U liaison.  

The cherry blossoms in the spring are a popular attraction in the Washington, D.C. area.

Statement of Professional Interest

Be direct, concise and as specific as possible (100 words). Talk about the skills, experiences, and activities you want from your internship, and why (connect to career goals).

Issues Essay

Pick one issue that you are concerned, passionate or knowledgeable about in the field in which you want to work. This should be written in first person, and should contain some of your personal views or opinions. Please do not write a research paper.  This essay serves two functions for TWC's hiring agencies: 

1)  It serves as a writing sample for employers to see the quality of your writing skills.

2)  It serves as a way of indicating to any hiring agency where you stand on issues, so that you are matched with a placement that is a philosophical fit for you.


Official Transcript

You will need ONE OFFICIAL transcript from EACH college or university you have attended. Contact Academic Records to learn about obtaining your Cal U transcript.


Two Letters of Recommendation

You will need two letters of reference; at least ONE MUST be from a faculty member. Give faculty advance notice of your request, and provide them with information on TWC if they aren't familiar.
