Tourism Studies Success Stories - Placements

Photo of Sandra MayerSandra performed her internship with the Gettysburg Convention and Visitors Bureau in Gettysburg, PA.  Through this internship, Sandra hoped to be in the field actually experiencing the surveying process, data collecting, and interaction with the tourists.

Sandra hopes that this internship will allow her to use the knowledge she has gained and apply it to real-world experience.

Your Internship Title:  Intern

How did you find your internship?
In National Geographic Magazine, then online.

What are your primary responsibilities/day-to-day activities?
Lead Guided hikes, coordinate and oversee some of the other activities.

Tell me about the most fascinating person you have met during your internship.
There are many many fascinating people in this town, but the one who helps me the most is Eddie Dry. He is a very intelligent man.  Every time he opens his mouth it’s some useful information pouring out.

What one day at work really stands out?
Fridays. I work all day at a Jeep tour place starting at 8 am and doing 3, 3-hour guided tours a day. I normally finish at 7:30 p.m. and then quickly shower and get to my internship at 8 to help oversee one of our programs for teens called CHILL.  I don't get out of there until 11:30 p.m., so Fridays are long.

What is the best part of your internship?
The beautiful scenery and great outdoor activities of all kinds.

What are the top two things you have learned?
Hands-on experience in the tourism field.  Also, I am learning and developing my people skills.

Would you recommend this internship to someone else?
Yes absolutely.

A quote from you regarding your internship experience?
To live is to learn. If you’re not learning, you’re not living.

Layne Nolan - Gettysburg, PA

Major:  Tourism Studies

Internship Placement:  Gettysburg, PA

Your Internship Title:  Research Analyst Intern

How did you find your internship?

I talked to Dr. Ryan and she asked if I wanted to do it.

What are your primary responsibilities/day-to-day activities?
I have to survey the visitors at Gettysburg, ask them questions about why they are visiting, how much they are spending, and what they are doing while they are here. I also have to put them into the computer and analyze them.

Tell me about the most fascinating person you have met during your internship.
The most fascinating person that I met while surveying was a lady who tracked her history all the way back to the Civil War where she learned that her great, great-grandfather fought in the war in Gettysburg. She thought he lost his leg in the battle, but he did not.  She found pictures showing her that that was not true.  She was at Gettysburg to see where her grandfather had fought and to learn more of her history.

What one day at work really stands out?
The day that really stood out to me was the day I got around 20 surveys, because I normally only have gotten 10 or so. This made me realize that it really depends on the people you ask and what kind of day it is to see how many surveys you get.

What is the best part of your internship?
The best part of the internship was meeting all of the people and learning why they were visiting.

What are the top two things you have learned?
I have learned that when doing this job you have to always have a good attitude. Also that it helps if the weather is nice and not raining. I also learned that you have to ask anyone that passes you because you never who will say yes.

Would you recommend this internship to someone else?
I would recommend this internship to other people. Dr. Ryan is a good boss.  She is understanding if you cannot make it at certain times, and she works with you if you need anything.

A quote from you regarding your internship experience?
I feel that my internship was a great learning experience. Also that it will help me a lot in the future on deciding what I would and wouldn’t like to do with the rest of my life.
