Two students set sail with 'Semester at Sea'
Cal U students Lauren Turosik and Lauren Snyder embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime semester of study and travel. They enrolled in the Semester at Sea program, and their Fall 2012 Atlantic Exploration is scheduled to take them to 16 cities in 14 nations — a voyage lasting 107 days.
The pair departed Aug. 23 from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and will return Dec. 7 to Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
With an ocean-going ship as their “traveling campus” and expert faculty as their guides, they are living, studying and exploring the world with other undergraduates and lifelong learners.
The Semester at Sea program, offered in academic partnership with the University of Virginia, integrates interdisciplinary coursework, experiential study and hands-on field labs in multiple countries. Our Cal U travelers will return to the University after their voyage.
Lauren Turosik and Lauren Snyder are sending regular reports during their Semester at Sea experience. They are eager to share details about life aboard ship and their adventures in port cities on both sides of the Atlantic. See their itinerary
Meet the travelers
I’m Lauren Turosik, and I live right here in California, Pa. I’m a junior with dual majors — communication studies with a concentration in public relations, and tourism studies. At Cal U I’m a group fitness instructor, an AmeriCorps Scholar, a DJ for WCAL radio, a peer mentor, a student note-taker and an active member of the Society for Leadership and Success. I also sit on the Faculty Forum’s communications committee.
My name is Lauren Snyder and I reside in Parker, Pa., the smallest city in the U.S.A., according the welcome sign! I am a junior majoring in communication disorders with a minor in psychology. Before the voyage, I participated with the University cheerleading squad for two years and taught group fitness classes at Herron Recreation and Fitness Center. I am most excited to visit London, England, in the week following the Olympic Games!
