The Faculty Professional Development Center offers a variety of award and grant opportunities that facilitate professional development for faculty.

Final Reporting Requirements

Internal Annual Grant

The FPDC Internal Annual Grant Program is generally intended to provide professional growth opportunities for individual faculty (although joint and group projects are also welcome). Proposals can be submitted for the following categories: Scholarly Growth, Teaching, and Service.

Continuing Excellence Fund

The FPDC Continuing Excellence Fund provides ongoing support for faculty who have received previous support from the FPDC for projects repeated more than once.  Download the FPDC Application Form (located at the top, right-hand area of this page) and/or view the Continuing Excellence Fund guidelines for additional details regarding this program.

Irene O'Brien Grant

The purpose of the fund is to promote research or scholarship  that leads to publication or otherwise makes an academic contribution to the university or to the academic discipline.  Download the FPDC Application Form and/or view the Irene O’Brien Grant guidelines for additional details regarding this program.

Merit Award

The Merit Award recognizes faculty who are currently engaged in exceptional research, teaching, or grant-writing or faculty who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to service and service-learning or display exceptional uses of technology. Small Grant

The purpose of the small grants is to provide support for research, service and service-learning, teaching and advising activities, or use of technology in one of these areas at California University of Pennsylvania for the fall, spring, and summer terms.  Download the FPDC Application Form and/or view the Small Grant guidelines and FPDC Subcommittee Definitions for additional details regarding this program.

AED Grant

The 2013-2014 AED Grants will not be offered due to current budgetary constraints.

Travel Award

The FPDC Travel Award will award regular (tenured or tenure-track) faculty members funds to assist with traveling expenses to present at a conference, serve in an official conference or organization capacity (e.g. conference planning committee member, organization officer, etc.) at the conference he or she is attending. Vargo Award

The Vargo Award recognizes faculty who have served as a faculty member at California University for at least 10 years and have demonstrated outstanding achievement across at least two of the three areas of teaching and learning, scholarly growth, and service and service learning and significant achievement in at least one other of these three areas. Final Reporting Requirements

Travel Award

  1. Report expenditures.  Provide copies of your Final Expense Report to show how your award money was spent. Delineate and provide copies of receipts for any expenses incurred covered by this fund. (Funds are released to your department only after these receipts are received by the FPD office.)
  2. Further showcasing. You are encouraged (but not required) to consider showcasing the learning gained from your travel in any of the following ways.  Your professional development work then has the potential to stimulate the intellectual life of the university community.
    • Conduct a brown-bag discussion
    • Conduct a FPD workshop regarding your activity.
    • Participate in the Academic Excellence Event.
    • Contact the Office of Communications and Public Relations to be interviewed for an article in the Journal.
    • Request approval from the FPD Committee for another method that you might desire to showcase your accomplishment.

All Others

  1. Provide a description of goals from the original project application.

  2. Explain and provide proof of how these goals were fulfilled.  An explanation of how you fulfilled those goals or reasons why the goals were not fulfilled.  You must attach proof of fulfillment of goals, such as providing copies of the program of events from a conference, publications and/or presentations, pictures or videos of exhibits and/or performances, photographs of poster presentations, letters from service recipient agencies and/or students who participated in the project attesting to the benefits derived from the service, copies of a new (or revised) course proposal and/or program, copies of new assessment strategies, copies of papers and/or journal articles that were created or published as a result of the grant, etc.

  3. Provide a timeline of the project.  Show your research schedule (if applicable).

  4. Explain the significance of the project.  An explanation of the significance and impact of the project, including your professional development goals that were realized as a result of the project.

  5. Report expenditures.  Provide copies of your Final Expense Report to show how your grant money was spent. Delineate and provide copies of receipts for any expenses incurred covered by this grant.

  6. Further showcasing.  You are encouraged (but not required) to consider showcasing the learning gained from your travel in any of the following ways.  Your professional development work then has the potential to stimulate the intellectual life of the university community.  Contact the Faculty Center to schedule a presentation about the project at California University of Pennsylvania .
  • Conduct a brown-bag discussion regarding your activity.
  • Participate in the Academic Excellence Event.
  • Contact the Public Relations Office to be interviewed for an article in the Journal.
  • Encourage undergraduate students involved in the research to submit a poster or present a paper at the Student Scholarship and Creativity Event.
  • Submit a poster or video for the annual Service and Service-Learning Poster Event if the grant involved is a service activity.
  • Request approval from the FPD Committee for another method that you might desire to showcase your accomplishment.
