New Student “Preps”: Beginning the Semester Smoothly

You and your soon-to-be college student have been purchasing and packing for weeks in preparation for campus arrival. But, has he/she checked these off the list? Student “Preps” Checklist

Campus Resources That Every Student Should Know About

One of the best pieces of advice that a parent can give to a college student is “Use the resources available on campus.” Identifying those resources early in a student’s college career, and knowing
where they’re located, can go a long way to increasing the chances for overall success in college. Campus Resources

New and Improved Calcard

A student’s CalCard is much more than just a campus ID card. The CalCard provides campus users a fast and easy payment method for a host of campus offerings. Purchases at on-campus dining locations, vending machines, library copy machines, residence hall laundry facilities, and the University Bookstore can all be made quickly and easily with a CalCard. And parents or guest users can add money to a student’s Calcard conveniently through the Parent/ Family Portal. Beginning this semester, students will notice some new changes and enhanced features making the CalCard experience better than ever! CalCard Office Launches Improved Online Web Portal

Meal Plan Adjustments

Students who wish to change their meal plan membership must do so during the permitted adjustment period by contacting the Office of Housing and Residence Life located in Residence Hall B, (phone: 724-938-4444 or email: housing@calu.edu). Adjustments can be made without financial penalty up to the close of business on the Friday immediately preceding the start of the semester. Meal plan adjustments which occur between the close of business on the Friday immediately preceding the start of the semester and the close of business on the first Friday of semester will be assessed a fee based on the adjustment; cancelations will be charged 10% of the base meal plan rate plus dine dollars expended. After the adjustment period, meal plans can be cancelled and a partial refund made only upon complete withdrawal from the University. **Fall 2012 Semester: The meal plan adjustment deadline without financial penalty is Friday, August 24, at 4 pm. The meal plan adjustment period with financial impact is after 4 pm on August 24 until Friday, August 31 at 4 pm.** Meal Plans

“Be on Your Best Behavior”

Adapting to the University community while navigating pitfalls can be trying. Most incoming students will experience increased freedom, be exposed to a more diverse community with wider varieties of views, and be challenged to make a greater number of decisions independently than previously experienced at home. As a college parent, your informed and consistent messages still matter. It is important to discuss expectations for behavior before your student arrives on campus. It’s also important to be informed of the University’s standards for student behavior. Be Responsible: Student Conduct Questions and Answers: Submitted by Mr. James Pflugh, Dean of Student Conduct

Safety Alerts

Beginning the first week of the semester, students will be notified through campus announcements of the option to register for Cal U Text Alerts. The safety alerts system is a free emergency text messaging service designed for students and others in the campus community who might be affected directly by an emergency on campus or in close proximity to it. Once a student has registered for safety alerts, he/she may choose to add another cell phone number. **Accounts are active for one year only. Returning students who wish to receive safety alerts must reregister annually.** Safety Alert FAQ
