Academic Calendar Update
To better meet the needs of students and families the academic calendar has been revised. Beginning this Spring, there will be no classes on the Monday following Easter; specifically, this year there will be no classes on Monday, April 1. Additionally, Reading Day will be eliminated in both Spring and Fall semesters. In lieu of Reading Day, a regular class day will occur, with exam week beginning the Monday after classes end (starting at 4:00 pm). With the elimination of Reading Day and Mission Day, Fall Break will be now be the entire week of Thanksgiving, this year Thanksgiving Break is Monday, November 25 – Friday, November 29.
Early Registration for Fall 2013 is tentatively scheduled for March 11-15. It is during this week that your student will register for next semester classes. Remind your student to make an appointment with his/her faculty advisor well in advance to discuss academic planning. Students register by class rank; Seniors on Monday, Juniors on Tuesday, Sophomores on Thursday, and Freshmen on Friday. Students should watch for campus announcements providing further details and instructions. Please note: Students who are not prepared to register early on their day risk not being able to register for preferred classes.
Don't Let Holds Hold Them Back
Students should also check VIP (Vulcan Information Portal) to confirm that there are no “holds” on their account. A hold prevents a student from registering until the hold is released. A hold may be placed on a student’s account for a variety of reasons, including past due payments, fees, fines, and advisement. The office that imposed the hold must release it before registration can occur. Students who are not ready to register for classes risk not being able to register for the classes they prefer.
Do you want to increase your student’s chances for a timely graduation and decrease the chances of wasting time and money on unnecessary courses? Or is your student questioning his/her current major and considering another? Degrees Works is an online academic planning tool located in student VIP or accessible from the Cal U main page. The tool assists students by tracking academic progress in their chosen major, showing earned credits and courses still needed. It also features a tool for modeling alternate degrees, allowing students to determine how earned credits might apply under a new major. Degree Works is an effective academic planning instrument, but it does not replace the need for a student to meet regularly with a faculty advisor.
