Cal U Parent and Family E-News: September-October 2013

New Parent/Guest Portal

The University has introduced a secure online Parent/Guest Portal where students may give parents or guests direct access to their financial, billing or academic records. The portal is now the exclusive means by which a student can establish FERPA proxy access. The new features offer parents a more convenient means for viewing the information they are looking for, as well as providing a vehicle for enhanced communication between parents and students. Note: Registration for the Parent/Guest Portal must be initiated first by your student. To get started, view the Parent/Guest Portal Instructions. For technical assistance, please contact the University Help Desk 724-938-5911 or email utechrequests@calu.edu

Preparing for Early Registration

Early Registration for Spring 2014 semester is tentatively scheduled for October 21 -25. It is during this week that your student will register for next semester’s classes. Students register by class rank - Seniors on Monday, Juniors on Tuesday, Sophomores on Thursday, and Freshmen on Friday. Remind your student to make an appointment with his/her faculty advisor well in advance to discuss their academic plans. Students should also check VIP (Vulcan Information Portal) to confirm that there are no “holds” on their account. A hold may be placed on a student’s account for a variety of reasons, including past due payments, fees, fines, and advisement. A hold will prevent your student from registering until the office that imposed the hold has released it. Students who are not ready to register for classes risk not being able to register for the classes they prefer. Note: Students should watch for campus announcements providing further registration details and instructions.

Campus Resources for Students

One of the best pieces of advice that a parent can give to a college student is “Use the resources available on campus.” Identifying those resources early in a student’s college career, and knowing where they’re located, can go a long way to increasing the chances for overall success in college. Does your student know about these Campus Resources?

Study Abroad

Has your son or daughter considered a study abroad experience as part of their Cal U education? Students have studied in Australia, Costa Rica, England, India, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Madagascar, and many other locations around the world. Study options exist for 1-2 weeks, several weeks in the summer, or a traditional full semester abroad.
