Cal U Parent & Family E-News: January 2014

A NEW YEAR, A NEW FAFSA

It’s not too soon to file the 2014-2015 Free Application for Federal Student Aid application. Even if you filed the FAFSA form last year, you must refile this year whether there are changes to the family finances or not. The Financial Aid Office encourages parents and students to use the IRS Data Retrieval process when completing the form, as it is an easier way to provide your tax data. The IRS Data Retrieval tool allows users to access the IRS tax return information needed to complete the FAFSA, and then transfer the data directly into the FAFSA form, ensuring that FAFSA has accurate tax information. Other important Dates: March 15-Priority FAFSA deadline for scholarships. May 1-FAFSA deadline for PHEAA state grants.

FACULTY ADVISORS:  WHY THEY’RE IMPORTANT TO YOUR STUDENT

Every Cal U student who has declared an academic major has been assigned a faculty advisor. The advisor-advisee relationship may be one of the most important and potentially rewarding relationships that your student will develop during college. You may be asking, “What does a faculty advisor actually do and how can my student benefit?”

SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS

Last month the Financial Aid Office sent out Financial Aid Warning and Financial Aid Suspension emails to students who failed to meet satisfactory academic progress. Students may also check their status in VIP. When on Financial Aid Warning, students are still eligible for financial aid for that semester. If the student fails the following semester, they will be placed on Financial Aid Suspension. When on Financial Aid Suspension, students are not eligible for financial aid unless an appeal is submitted. All students are encouraged to submit appeals and should contact the Financial Aid Office. The appeal deadline for Spring 2014 semester is February 7. Questions? The Financial Aid Office is ready to help and may be reached Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at (724) 938- 4415, finaid@calu.edu, or by visiting the FA Office on the first floor of Dixon Hall.
