Lillian M. Bassi Core Values Award
Ivan ’41 and Adelaide ’38 Guesman each were awarded the title of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, at winter Commencement in 2008. They were the first couple in Cal U’s history to receive this award. Ivan Guesman taught in the education department at Cal U for 13 years, and his wife was a lifelong educator. The Guesmans have established a scholarship for students in the College of Education and Human Services, and contributed to the Kara Alumni House, creating an overnight guest room in honor of their parents.
President’s Faculty Award for Research
Dr. Carol Bocetti, associate professor in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences, was honored in 2012 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for her research and recovery initiatives to protect an endangered songbird, the Kirtland’s warbler. The Wildlife Society also named her the 2012 student chapter adviser of the year.
President’s Faculty Award for Service
Dr. Cassandra Kuba, an assistant professor in the Department of Justice, Law and Society, specializes in forensic anthropology and historical bio-archaeology. Recently, Kuba has been a consultant for TV crime shows such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Bones, working with her students to determine if storylines are plausible.
President’s Faculty Award for Teaching
Dr. John Nass, a professor in the Department of Justice, Law and Society, has taught Cal U students to dig into the past every other summer since 1991 at a hands-on archaeology field school. Open to all majors, the school teaches students to be careful excavators and observers, Nass says.
President’s Emeriti Faculty Award (posthumous)
G. Ralph Smith II, an assistant professor of English at Cal U for 30 years, died in 2010 and bequeathed $1.95 million to Cal U for general scholarships. The gift is believed to be the largest scholarship donation in Cal U’s modern history. The University has rechristened Residence Hall A, which houses many Honors Program students, as the G. Ralph Smith II Honors Hall.
