Visit Turkey

Itinerary: The trip likely will include stops in these cities:

  • Istanbul, a world city where East meets West, where ancient meets contemporary, and where there is something for everyone. Istanbul is the country’s largest city and the economic, cultural and historical heart of Turkey. Among the places to visit are the Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern, Hippodrome and Blue Mosque, as well as many interesting bazaars and markets.
  • Izmir, located on the scenic Aegean coast. Izmir has a rich cultural history that spans thousands of years. This is the home of the Temple of Artemis, also known as Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
  • Konya, a “living museum” that has been inhabited since 3000 B.C. Traces of ancient civilizations remain visible throughout the city. Konya was the final home of the poet Rumi, whose 13th-century followers established the Mevlevi Sufi order of Islam, also known as the whirling dervishes.
  • Kayseri, the gateway to Cappadocia, a World Heritage Site. This is a stunning area of otherworldly rock and cave formations that have served as homes, churches, monasteries and underground cities since 1800 B.C.

Dates:  June 15 (depart from Pittsburgh) to June 25, 2014.

Price: International roundtrip airfare (approximately) $1,400, plus (approximately) $300 for transportation within Turkey. The trip is generously sponsored by the Turkish Cultural Center of Pittsburgh.

Accommodations: During their visit to Turkey, students will stay in residence halls, guesthouses and with families.

Eligibility: The trip is available ONLY to Cal U undergraduate and graduate students who are in good standing and enrolled for the fall 2014 semester. A valid passport is required prior to departure.
