Spring safety reminder: Know who’s at the door

As the weather warms up, you may see utility and road crews at work near your off-campus house or apartment. If someone dressed as a worker appears at your door or asks to come inside, take these commonsense precautions:

Stop and think: Are you expecting someone? Most utility or maintenance companies will make an appointment or hang a notice on your door before coming to your home. Never open your door to someone you don’t know.

Ask for ID: Reputable utility or maintenance workers will carry proper identification. Ask to see ID, then call the utility company or phone your landlord to check that repairs have been scheduled. In the meantime, keep your door locked. Reputable workers will identify themselves and wait while you check them out.

Call for help: If the situation doesn’t feel right, keep the door locked. Call 911 and ask police to come and identify the individual at your door. If the individual leaves when you call police, phone 911 and report the incident.

To reach the California University Police Department, phone 724-938-4299.

For emergencies, call 911.
