

Tennis Team Falls in NCAA Quarterfinals

UPDATE:
The tennis team's 2010 season ended with a 5-2 loss to Hawaii
Pacific University
in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Tournament on May 13 in Altamont
Springs, Fla. Cal's Anastassiya Zherdeva was victorious in No. 2 singles, and the Vulcans'
No. 3 doubles team of Mariana Oliveira and Jutta Bornefeld also won. Coached by veteran Pablo Montana, the Cal U team finished
24-6 overall and had a 13-match win streak end with the setback. This marked the second consecutive season and the third time in
four years that the Vulcans reached the national quarterfinals. Previously this spring, Cal won its sixth straight PSAC-West
title and fourth consecutive PSAC and NCAA Atlantic Regional crowns.
PREVIOUSLY:
Cal U's women's tennis advanced to the quarterfinals in the
NCAA Division II Tournament for the second consecutive season, and the third
time in the past four years, following a 5-0 victory over Grand Valley State
(Mich.) on May 12 in Altamont Springs, Fla. Up next for sixth-ranked Cal U is ninth-ranked Hawaii
Pacific on May 13. Coached by veteran Pablo Montana, the Cal U team is 24-5
overall and has won its past 13 straight matches. Cal U's women's tennis advanced to the Round of 16 in the
NCAA Division II Tournament for the fourth consecutive season following
victories over Mercyhurst (6-0) and Charleston, W.Va. (5-0) at the NCAA
Atlantic Region No. 1 Tournament, contested at Cal's new Roadman Park Tennis
Complex. The Vulcans advance to the round of 16 at the NCAA II
National Championships, to be held May 12-15 in Altamont Springs, Fla. Cal U will
face Grand Valley State (Mich.) on May 12. Coached by veteran Pablo Montana, the Cal U team is 23-5
overall. The Vulcans reached the national quarterfinals in 2007 and
last spring. The team has six PSAC championships overall and has won the past
six straight PSAC-Western Division titles.
