MEN'S HOCKEY TEAM FALLS IN NATIONAL SEMIFINALS

UPDATE, MARCH 12

A 2-1 loss in overtime ended the season for Cal U's College Hockey East (CHE) men's hockey team.

The Vulcans were defeated by College of the Canyons, of San Clarita, Calif., in the national semifinals of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division 3 tournament.

Nate Bohn scored the lone Vulcan goal before the Cougars tied the game with just a few minutes left in regulation play at the Edge Arena in Holland, Mich. College of the Canyons scored to win the game 11 minutes into the overtime period.

Under the direction of head coach Justin Berger, the Vulcans finish the 2010-2011 season with a 27-4-1 overall record. Cal U went 2-2 at the national tournament after winning their fifth straight CHE championship.

UPDATE, MARCH 11

A 4-2 win over Florida Gulf Coast propelled Cal U's College Hockey East (CHE) men's hockey team to the national semifinals in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 3 tournament.

Ryan Jones continued his dominant play with two goals in the March 11 contest at the Edge Arena in Holland, Mich.

The Vulcans will face College of the Canyons, of San Clarita, Calif., at 9:45 a.m. March 12. The national championship game will follow at 8:30 p.m.

UPDATE, MARCH 10

In their second game at the ACHA Division 3 National Tournament, the Vulcans suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime loss to Davenport (Mich.) University.

Cal owned a 2-0 advantage after two periods but then fell behind 3-2 before rallying to send the game into overtime.

The Vulcans, the top-seeded team in Pool C, next will face Florida Gulf Coast University, at 2:30 p.m. March 11. The winner of that game will advance to the national semi-finals at 9:45 a.m. March 12. The ACHA national championship game follows at 8:30 p.m.

UPDATE, March 9:

The Cal U College Hockey East (CHE) men's hockey team opened action at the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division 3 National Tournament with a 5-3 victory over McKendree University today at the Edge Arena in Holland, Mich.

Ryan Jones scored two goals, and Cal U outshot McKendree 44-18.

Under the direction of head coach Justin Berger, the Vulcans (26-2-1) are the top-seeded team in Pool C after winning their fifth consecutive CHE championship.

Cal U now will face Davenport (Mich.) College at 7 p.m. March 10.

The winners of the four tournament pools will meet in the national semifinals at 9:45 a.m. March 12, with the ACHA national championship game to follow at 8:30 p.m.

Cal U's CHE squad won the 2008 ACHA national title and reached the quarterfinals a year ago.

 


 

Cal U’s College Hockey East (CHE) men’s hockey team has qualified for the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division III National Tournament.

Under the guidance of head coach Justin Berger, the Cal I team owns a 22-1-1 overall record.

The ACHA National Championships will be contested March 9-12 at The Edge Ice Arena in Holland, Mich.

A year ago, the Vulcans advanced to the ACHA quarterfinals. Cal U won the ACHA national title in 2008.

Before heading to nationals, Cal I will look for its fifth consecutive CHE crown, beginning with a Feb. 27 semifinal game (against a team to be determined) at the Bladerunners Ice Complex in Bethel Park.

The Vulcans compiled a league-best 11-1 regular season mark in the CHE North Division.

Graduate student forward Ryan Jones leads Cal with 34 goals and 78 points.
