Junior student-athlete Melissa Gates became the first NCAA individual champion in Cal U women’s swimming history on March 9 when she won the 50-yard freestyle during the first day of the NCAA Division II Championships at the Palo Alto Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas.

Gates won the event with a school and PSAC record time of 22.72 seconds. She repeated as an All-American in the 50-yard freestyle, giving her four All-America finishes in her career.

In all, Cal U has eight student-athletes participating at the Nationals, which conclude on March 12.
