team’s 2012 season ended with a 5-2 setback to defending national champion
Barry (Fla.) University in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II National
Championships today in Louisville, Ky. Fourth-seeded junior
Jade Pondicas won in singles competition for Cal U while the Vulcans’
top-seeded doubles tandem of seniors Martina Robesova and Franziska
Steinhardt was also victorious. Cal U finishes the
season with a 24-6 overall record after reaching the national quarterfinals for
the fifth time in six years. UPDATE: May 16, 2012 The women’s tennis team defeated Cameron (Okla.) University 5-2 today in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II National Championships in Louisville, Ky. With the victory — the team’s 14th consecutive win — the Vulcans improve to 24-5 overall. Cal U will face Barry (Fla.) University in the national quarterfinals. They play at 9 a.m. May 17 in Louisville. This marks the fifth time in six years that the women’s tennis team has reached the national quarterfinals. UPDATE: April 29, 2012 Playing at home at Roadman Park, Cal U's eighth-ranked women's tennis team defeated North Carolina rivals Winston-Salem State and Shaw universities by 5-0 scores during the first two rounds of the NCAA Division II tournament. With the wins on April 28-29, the Vulcans improve to 23-5 overall and advance to the Round of 16, set for May 16-19 in Louisville, Ky. This will be Cal U's sixth consecutive trip to the Round of 16. The team has reached the national quarterfinals four times over the past five seasons. ORIGINAL STORY Cal U’s eighth-ranked women’s tennis team will host preliminary-round matches of the NCAA Division II Championships April 28-29 at Roadman Park. The top seed in the Atlantic Region, Cal U (21-5) faces eighth-seeded Winston-Salem State (15-7) of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) at 1 p.m. Saturday. In the other first-round match at Roadman Park, fifth-seeded West Virginia State (14-9) will face CIAA-Champion and fourth-seeded Shaw (25-1) at 10 a.m. Saturday. The winners of those rounds will meet in a second-round match at 10 a.m. Sunday at Roadman Park. The winner will advance to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Championships May 16-19 in Louisville, Ky. Under the guidance of veteran head coach Pablo Montana, the Vulcans are making their eighth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance — their ninth in 10 years.
