THIS WEEK'S MESSAGE FROM ACTING PRESIDENT GERALDINE JONES
Posted on June 1, 2012
From: Acting
President Geraldine M. Jones Educating students has been the
core mission of this institution for 160 years, and it remains the heart of the
Cal U experience. Today, as always, California University is defined by its
student-centered approach to education and its commitment to each of our
students’ success. Our academic programs prepare
students to thrive in the 21st-century workplace. Cal U seeks
accreditation for every eligible program — an assurance that our programs meet
the highest standards and offer meaningful learning opportunities. For example,
in the past year our Computer Information Systems program received
accreditation from the prestigious Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, the world’s leading accreditation agency for
applied science, computing, engineering and technology programs. Cal U’s expert, caring faculty
members put teaching first. Using modern teaching strategies in classrooms equipped
with “smart” technology, they create an engaging learning environment that
motivates students and inspires them to do well. Ongoing scholarship and
participation in service learning projects — such as the collaboration by our
departments of Psychology, Nursing and Early, Middle and Special Education in
the Mustard Seed Project in Jamaica — enhances our professors’ instruction, and
they take pride in their students’ achievements. Recognizing that education
occurs both inside and outside the classroom, Cal U faculty members encourage
students to put their skills into practice through scholarly activities,
professional conferences, internships and other real-world experiences. They
also encourage our students to grow as men and women of character through civic
engagement and community service. During the 2011-2012 academic year, Cal U
students participated in more experiential learning than ever before, gaining
valuable experience with Fortune 500 companies, philanthropic organizations,
professional sports teams and many other world-class organizations. At Cal U, we believe that a
strong academic foundation is essential to the process of “building character,
building careers.” In the days to come, our University will continue to offer
the high-quality education that our students and their families have every
right to expect.
To: All students,
faculty, staff, alumni and University friends
