THIS WEEK'S MESSAGE FROM ACTING PRESIDENT GERALDINE JONES
Posted on August 17, 2012
From: Acting
President Geraldine M. Jones In just one week, a new group of
freshmen and transfer students will become part of our Cal U family. I’m eager
to meet them, and to help them feel at home on our campus. After earning two degrees and
enjoying a 38-year career at Cal U, it’s fair to say that I’ve established a
lifelong relationship with this University. I hope that our new students will
forge equally strong ties to Cal U. To help our newcomers settle in,
we are continuing our tradition of Move-In-Day, an opportunity for the
administration, faculty, staff and returning students to welcome our newest
students while assisting with the move-in process. Move-In-Day is the first event of
a three-day orientation for new students. During this orientation,
our incoming students will learn about Cal U for Life,
a program designed to create and strengthen those ties. We’ll introduce our new
students to Cal U’s rich history. We’ll explain University traditions. We’ll
share our core values and encourage students to find mentors, as well as new
friends, as they prepare for the fall semester. Cal U for Life fosters a spirit of gratitude and creates
opportunities for students to thank those who have helped them along the way.
It encourages students to give their time and use their talents to promote the
greater good. Each year, Cal U students collectively devote thousands of hours
to community service. New students soon discover that our campus culture of service
and philanthropy makes California University a truly special place. By embracing Cal U for Life, our students become part of a tradition that
reaches back more than 160 years and stretches far into the future. They join a
family that includes generations of Cal U students, alumni, faculty, staff and
University friends. In the words of our Cal U mission statement, they take
their place in a “diverse, caring and scholarly learning community”
invested in their success. The culmination of our three-day
orientation is the Cal U for Life convocation,
where students pledge to make a
positive contribution to Cal U through scholarship, leadership and service. In
return, the University promises to: offer
character- and career-building opportunities; make a Cal U diploma ever more valuable through the years; and provide continuing support and a
lifelong welcome to every graduate. I ask every member of our campus
community to live up to that promise. From the many options available, our
students and their families have chosen our University. Now and in the years to
come, we want them to feel confident they made the right choice. In the spirit of Cal U for Life, please join me in
welcoming all our students to a positive and productive academic year.
To: All students,
faculty, staff, alumni and University friends
