THIS WEEK'S MESSAGE FROM ACTING PRESIDENT GERALDINE JONES
Posted on August 24, 2012
From: Acting
President Geraldine M. Jones As the 2012-2013 academic year begins, I am pleased
to announce the appointment of two important academic administrators: Dr.
Bruce Barnhart will serve as the acting provost/vice president for Academic
Affairs. Dr. Barnhart has a long history with Cal
U, where he earned an Associate of Applied Science as a physical therapist
assistant, a Bachelor of Science in education, and a master’s degree in
education. In 1992 he completed an Ed.D. degree in professional physical
education, with a minor in higher education administration, at West Virginia
University. Dr. Barnhart has been a Cal U employee
since 1984, when he joined the University as an instructor and athletic trainer
for football. In 1992 he was named director of the accredited athletic
training education program. Since 2008 he has served as the associate
provost/associate vice president for Academic Affairs. His main
responsibilities in that role included working with curriculum proposals and
implementation; managing review and approval for new academic programs;
assisting the University provost with development of the course schedule;
serving as the academic liaison to Human Resources; handling labor relations,
grievances and legal issues; and responding to student complaints. I am pleased to welcome Dr. Barnhart to
the position of acting provost — the University’s chief academic officer and
the individual charged with the overall leadership of academic affairs at Cal
U. Dr. Stanley Komacek has been appointed
dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research/associate provost. Dr. Komacek also is an
alumnus of Cal U, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in industrial arts in
1980. He received his master’s degree in industrial education from Miami
University of Ohio in 1981, and his Ed.D. in technology education from West
Virginia University in 1987. Dr. Komacek began his
career at Cal U in 1987 as a faculty member in the
Applied Engineering and Technology Department, and he served as department
chair for 13 years. In 2009 he accepted the role of associate provost/associate
vice president for Academic Affairs, with primary responsibility for academic facilities planning, undergraduate
academic policies, academic program inventory, academic space utilization,
faculty searches, technology fee projects, the SMART classroom project,
and grants supervision. I am pleased that Dr. Komacek has accepted this new role as dean of the
graduate school/associate provost, since his experience in research, grants and
academic strategic planning will be invaluable. Please join me in congratulating these
two administrators on their new positions.
To: All students,
faculty, staff, alumni and University friends
