THIS WEEK'S MESSAGE FROM ACTING PRESIDENT GERALDINE JONES
Posted on September 28, 2012
To: All
students, faculty, staff, alumni and University friends I am pleased to announce that Dr.
Sugata Mitra will be returning to Cal U next month. A professor of educational
technology at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom, Dr. Mitra is
recognized around the world for research projects that explore the impact of
technology on teaching and learning. As you may recall, he discussed
his ideas about “minimally invasive learning” at Mission Day sessions last
year. He also described his groundbreaking “hole in the wall” experiments and
commented on our own Cal U Fusion technology initiative. On Wednesday, Oct. 17, Dr. Mitra
will share his knowledge and global perspective with our campus community once
again. We expect to discuss in greater depth the various ways that technology
is reshaping education. Dr. Joseph Zisk, of the Cal U
Teaching & Learning Center, will organize a series of conversations with
Dr. Mitra throughout the day. In those sessions, the dean for each of our
Colleges will join faculty members and students in a dialogue about areas of
particular interest. In addition, we have asked Dr.
Mitra to address the entire campus community at 7 p.m. in Steele Hall Mainstage
Theatre. The public is welcome to attend, and we will extend a special
invitation to K-12 teachers in the region. In keeping with Dr. Mitra’s
message, we anticipate streaming his lecture online, and we hope to arrange an
interactive videoconference with a local school district, as well. Please save the date and plan to
participate in this exciting opportunity. Details about Dr. Mitra’s visit are
still being finalized, but I am certain it will spark discussion and give us
all fresh insights into the future of teaching and learning.
