From: Acting President Geraldine Jones

Two weeks ago I had the great pleasure of speaking with students at our Fall 2012 Student Convocation. I'd like to share my impressions of that event with those of you who weren't able to attend.

After a wonderful introduction by Alexandra Brooks, president of Student Government, I briefly shared with students the same message I've delivered to our faculty and staff: Cal U will move forward by focusing on its core mission of educating students, so they can receive an excellent academic experience during their time on campus.

We also will work to stabilize our enrollment and put our financial house in order.

I wanted our students to meet the leadership team that guides their University, so I introduced our provost and vice presidents. In just a few words, each Cabinet member explained his or her role in keeping our University running smoothly.

Then we got down to the business at hand — listening to our students and responding to their questions.

Our conversation took many directions, from a request for fresh produce to queries about classroom technology, student retention and community relations. With their thoughtful questions, our students showed how deeply they care about their University.

Unfortunately, our time to talk was limited. But I want every member of the Cal U community — and especially our students — to know that I am still listening. The leadership team is listening, too.

One simple way to bring an issue to our attention is through the Electronic Suggestion Box. Just visit the Electronic Suggestion Box and complete the form.

Questions submitted through the Electronic Suggestion Box are forwarded to the departments or individuals best able to address them. Good ideas will be carefully considered. I can't promise a solution to every problem, but I can promise that no thoughtful question or creative solution will be ignored.

This is our University, and together we can build on its strengths, address its challenges and work to assure its future.

This message comes to you at the close of Homecoming Week, another opportunity to interact with valued members of our Cal U community. Tonight I'll drop in on our Greek organizations as they put the finishing touches on their Homecoming floats. Tomorrow I'll visit with alumni as we enjoy Cal U's Homecoming festivities. (I'm especially looking forward to serving as grand marshal in the Homecoming parade!)

A wonderful celebration is planned, and everyone is welcome — students, faculty, staff, alumni and University friends. I hope to see many of you there!
