WOMEN'S TENNIS ENDS AT NCAA QUARTERFINALS

UPDATE: May 15, 2014:

The 12th-ranked women’s tennis team today lost 5-2 to sixth-ranked St. Leo (Fla.) in the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals at Altamonte Springs, Fla. 

Cal U’s doubles tandem of Lucie Sipkova and Lucie Rey were victorious along with Sipkova in singles play.

The team finishes a stellar season with a15-3 overall record and sixth consecutive appearance in the national quarterfinals.


UPDATE: May 14, 2014:

The women’s tennis team defeated 20th-ranked Northeastern State (Okla.), 5-0, in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II Championships at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Cal U’s doubles tandems of Lucie Sipkova and Lucie Rey, Ramona Czakon and Mariela Sarinana, and Jesse Burrell and Kiefer Shaw all were victorious. 

Singles victories by Shaw and Sarinana clinched the victory as Cal U advances to the national quarterfinals for the sixth consecutive season.

The 12th ranked Vulcans improve to 15-2 overall. The team will play St. Leo (Fla.) in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament at 9 a.m. May 15.


UPDATE, May 4, 2014:

The women’s tennis team defeated Mercyhurst 5-0 on May 4 in the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament at Roadman Park.

With the win the 12th-ranked Vulcans, the PSAC champions, improve to 14-2 overall.  

Cal U now advances to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II Championships May 14-17 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

They will face Northeastern State (Okla.) at 8 a.m. on May 14.

The women’s tennis team earned the Atlantic Region’s top seed and will host preliminary-round matches of the NCAA Division II Tournament May 3-4 at Roadman Park, weather permitting.

The 12th ranked Vulcans (13-2) will face the winner of the Mercyhurst-West Liberty match at 10 a.m. May 4.

Mercyhurst and West Liberty will meet in a first-round match at Roadman Park at 10 a.m. May 3.

In case of inclement weather, the matches could be moved to the Glen Creek Tennis Club in South Park Township.

The winner of the preliminary-round tournament will advance to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II Championships May 14-17 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Cal U earned the automatic qualifier after winning an unprecedented eighth straight PSAC championship with 5-0 conference tournament victories April 17-18 over West Chester and IUP.

The Vulcans are making their 10th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. They have advanced to the national quarterfinals six times in the past seven seasons.
