FRIEND PLACES 3rd AT USATF JR CHAMPIOSNHIPS

Freshman runner Julie Friend finished third in the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

She finished with a time of 10:36.55 while Elinor Purrier of New Hampshire and Hope Schmelzle of Purdue took first and second place, respectively.

Julie Friend competes on the trackAll-American track and field competitor Julie Friend, a sophomore, will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the USA Track & Field Junior Outdoor Championships on July 6, in Eugene, Ore.

Her event is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Eastern Standard Time at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.

The USATF Junior Outdoor Championships are open to qualifiers age 20 and younger. Friend qualified for this meet in April when she broke her then-school record at the Bison Classic hosted by Bucknell University.

Friend, the 2014 PSAC Freshman of the Year, will be one of three NCAA Division II competitors in a field of runners from all NCAA levels; some elite high school runners also will compete.
