The women’s basketball team's outstanding 2016-2017 season came to a close with an 85-69 loss to Virginia Union in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championship Game at Hamer Hall. 

Shatara  Parsons and Seairra Barrett led Cal U's scoring with 21 and 20 points, respectively.

The Vulcans finish with a 30-4 overall record.

UPDATE: March 11, 2017

The women’s basketball team defeated Mercyhurst, 86-75, in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament.

Seairra Barrett and Shatara Parsons scored 21 and 20 points, respectively.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 30-3 overall. Next, they play Virginia Union for the regional championship; tipoff is at 7 p.m. March 13. 

UPDATE, March 10, 2017

Despite playing without two starters due to injuries, Cal U’s women’s basketball team defeated Glenville State (WVa.), 88-86, on March 10 in the first round of the NCAA Division II National Tournament, at Hamer Hall.

Junior Seairra Barrett scored 29 points with 18 rebounds while classmate Shatara Parsons added 20 points and 14 rebounds.

The Vulcans improve to 29-3 overall and will next play Mercyhurst in a regional semifinal at 7:30 p.m. on March 11.

The 5 p.m. semifinal game at Hamer Hall on March 11 will feature Virginia Union against IUP.

The Cal U women’s basketball team has earned the top seed and will host in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional March 10, 11 and 13 at Hamer Hall.

Under the direction of sixth-year head coach Jess Strom, the Vulcans (28-3) will play eighth seed Glenville State (24-6) at 5 p.m

Other first-round games on March 10:

  • Third seed Virginia Union (23-4) vs. sixth seed Wheeling Jesuit (25-6) at noon.
  • Second seed IUP (23-6) vs. seventh seed Johnson C. Smith (22-7) at 2:30 p.m.
  • Fourth seed Shippensburg (24-6) vs. fifth seed Mercyhurst (23-8) at 7:30 p.m. 

The Atlantic Regional semifinal games will be at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. March 11, with the championship game set for 7 p.m. March 13.

The winning team advances to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight National Tournament, to be held March 21-22 at Alumni Hall on the campus of Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio.

Cal U is making its 14th NCAA Division II Tournament appearance in 16 years.

The Vulcans have won five NCAA Regional championships. They won the NCAA Division II national title two years ago, and in 2004.
