Professional Commitment and Responsibilities

Performance Principle Description

The candidate is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (students, parents, and other professionals in the learning community) and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.

Professional Development Program for Teacher Candidates

Overview:  All undergraduate and post-baccalaureate teacher education students are required to attend professional development seminars prior to applying for Admission to Teacher Education and for Recommendation for Student Teaching.  Students must meet the minimum number of seminars for each level.  The intent of the program is that students attend seminars over their academic career at Cal U, not to meet all requirements their freshman year.  Attendance at breakout sessions during professional conferences may be used to meet these requirements.   Graduate students should seek guidance from their programs about appropriate options. 

Documentation of Professional Development Activities:  All activities will be entered into LiveText by the teacher candidate to document attendance in the area of Principle 9 of the portfolio.  Teacher candidates will provide documentation by fully completing all of the areas in the template in the portfolio.  If documentation is available (meeting minutes, certificates, ...), you are encouraged to attach them. 

Portfolio Scoring:  Performance Principle 9 of the Portfolio will be met through complete documentation of participation in the Professional Development Program.  The activity  documentation will serve as both artifacts of the professional development activity attended and rationale through the summary and reflections for the seminars.  


  • Students need 3 professional development experiences  at the point of Admission to Teacher Education.
  • Students need a total of at least 9 professional development experiences for Recommendation for Student Teaching.  They must include 3 in each of the 3 categories below: 
  1. Professionalism & Leadership
  2. Content Specalty
  3. Issues in Education

Documentation of Professional Development Seminars

All seminars will be entered into a preformatted LiveText template.  For each seminar attended, students will be expected to provide the following documentation:

  • Date of Professional Development Experience:  
  • Title: 
  • Presenter(s):
  • Location:
  • Written Summary:  (2-3 sentences summarizing what the event)
  • Reflection:  (Paragraph of reflection.  What did you learn to help you become a better teacher?  Why should this experience count for this category? )
