Practicum & Career Outlook

California University of Pennsylvania has designed an Intensive Practicum for the Applied Behavior Analysis program to give students a wide range of potential placement options upon completion.

Students will have the opportunity to study under Board Certified Behavior Analysts while applying the content they have covered during their coursework.

Practicum Placement Sites:

  • Public and private school settings
  • Individualized home programming sites
  • Other mental health-related settings throughout Allegheny, Fayette, and Washington counties

Practicum Placement Site Tasks:

  • Conducting behavioral assessments
  • Designing education and behavioral programs
  • Conducting preference assessments
  • Developing behavior support plans
  • Creating data collection procedures

Please NOTE:  Students must first complete ESP 701 prior to being permitted to enroll in intensive practicum.

Career Outlook:

Individuals seeking the BACB certification may be working in any of the following fields:

Regular/Special education teacher
School counselor
Mental health therapist
Early intervention therapist
Speech therapy
School psychologist
Psychologist
Job coach
Transition specialist
Educational director
Behavior specialist consultant
Family therapist/counselor

Each position is unique in the pay structure offered within their organization along with whether or not the individual is working within a private program or publically-funded program.  Regardless of the current position, individuals who receive the BACB certification are recruited to apply for a variety of behaviorally-based positions offered throughout the country.  In addition to working for an organization, individuals who are BACB certified are now able to provide services privately in several states and submit billing to a client’s insurance coverage.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not provide data separately for salary potential for Board Certified Behavior Analysts.  However, BLS does provide data on closely related occupations.  The 2012 BLS data shows a median salary for social workers was $44,200 and the mean annual wage for clinical counseling and school psychologists was$72,220. These occupations are probably the most similar to the applied behavior analyst.
