School Psychology

Classes Begin Summer2016 most affordable master's in psychology

Our school psychology program brings together the knowledge base of several different disciplines, including child psychology, human development, and education with an emphasis on special education.  The first responsibility of school psychologists is to the population at risk for failure and who have identified disabilities.  With these populations, their roles include assessment (comprehensive evaluations of disability and risk), consultation with parents and teachers regarding instructional and behavioral interventions, direct interventions, including crisis prevention/intervention, individual and group counseling, skills training and training staff and parents as well as students to be more effective problem solvers and to better understand disability and risk issues.

The field of school psychology continues to be healthy and our graduates readily find jobs across the nation.

If you are interested in a rewarding career as a school psychologist, we offer two graduate programs to include a Master of Science in School Psychology and a Post Master's Educational Specialist Certificate in School Psychology

If you hold a bachelor’s degree, the M.S. in school psychology is the first step toward certification as a school psychologist.  This program is designed for students who intend to pursue certification in school psychology after the master’s degree, or for students who plan to pursue entry level professional careers as practitioners. A full-time student can obtain this 36 credit master’s degree in just 14 months; summer, fall, spring and summer semesters. The program offers an on-line summer start, followed by face to face evening classes, three times per week.

The graduate certificate in School Psychology provided students with the tools and skills needed to support students in the areas of human development, behavior and overall counseling.  This certificate can be completed on its own or added to the Master of Science in School Psychology.

Steeped in a science-practitioner theoretical orientation, the program's goals are consistent with the standards developed by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP)  and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Our core faculty hold doctorate degrees in school psychology and have extensive experience in the field.

A master's degree alone is not sufficient for state certification in school psychology. Certification coursework and an internship (credits beyond the master's degree) are required before one can practice as a school psychologist.  All certification students must first earn a master’s degree in school psychology prior to enrolling in the certification phase of our program. The entire school psychology program (M.S. plus certification) consists of the equivalent of three years of full-time graduate study.

Please Note: All students who will be seeking licensure/certification outside of Pennsylvania should consult the State Authorization web page for more information.

I am pleased to write a success story in regards to the California University of Pennsylvania School Psychology Program. The School Psychology Program is designed in a prestigious way and incorporates informative curriculum and various practicum experiences. Not only were we given the opportunity to experience hands on activities through practicum, we were also provided additional hours in the School Psychology Clinic at the campus to further enhance our school psychology skills.
