If you hold a master's degree in school counseling or a related field, California University of Pennsylvania's non-degree school counseling certification program enables you to meet all course requirements to become a Certified School Counselor Pre K-12 in Pennsylvania. The program also may prepare you to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Pennsylvania and other states.

If you have not taken the following courses or their equivalent courses as either an undergraduate or graduate, they are required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and must be taken in order to receive school counseling certification:

ESP 701: Introduction to Behavior Analysis (3 credits)
ESP 612 or ESP 613: Evidence Based Practices in Inclusion (3 credits)
EDU 650: Supporting English Language Learners (3 credits)
Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements (Regular)  

  • Certificate:  Bachelor's degree with a GPA of 2.90 or higher (Students with a GPA below 2.90 may apply for conditional admission)
  • Official transcripts from an accredited institution
  • Interview may be required
  • One-page resume of work and education may be required
  • International Graduate Applicants


Conditional Admission Requirements

  • Conditional Admission may be granted with the following modifications of the Regular Admissions Requirements.  Those admitted conditionally based on missing document/s have up to a maximum of two semesters to satisfy these requirements:
    • Certificate:  Bachelor's degree with a GPA under 2.90 will be reviewed for a decision
    • Unofficial transcripts from all institutions attended may be requested
    • Interview may be required
    • One-page resume of work and education may be required
