Post Bachelor's Certification in Early Childhood Education: Curriculum

All of our courses in the Post Bachelor's Certification in Early Childhood Education program include small group projects, case studies, papers, exams, discussion and debate as the basis for earning credits. All courses feature asynchronous discussion (i.e., messages are posted at any time and students can see messages previously posted by others).

The program is for certified teachers interested in gaining additional certification in early childhood education.  The curriculum is aligned with National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) standards. 

Note: Completion of an approved certification program is a requirement for certification in Pennsylvania. In the certification process, Cal U informs the state that a student has completed the University's state-approved program. The state then reviews the student's credentials and determines eligibility for certification. We encourage you to contact the Pennsylvania Department of Education before beginning our program for further information about certification requirements in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The online program coordinator reviews student resumes upon admission to the program to determine which students will need to complete EDE 768 Teacher Education Internship as part of the program.  You are responsible for providing the coordinator with an accurate resume that reflects your teaching experiences.  Those who do not have experience teaching Pre-K children (ages ranging from birth-age 5) will be required to complete the internship during semester 3, 4 or 5.

*Internship Note: The internship is to be completed during semester 3, 4, or 5 in the cohort cycle.  All internships must be pre-approved a semester in advance and all internship students must have appropriate clearances (ACT 34, 114, and 151 if PA internship; if you are completing an out-of-state internship, clearances necessary for that state also apply.)  Schools or sites may require additional documentation.  Any additional documents/ requirements must be met in order for the internship to begin.

Capstone Experience

All students in the online program are required to demonstrate NAEYC and PDE competencies for Pre-K to grade 4.  In order to demonstrate program competencies you are required to prepare an electronic portfolio which is reviewed for graduation and program completion. 

Effective 2011

NOTE: Those seeking PA early childhood certification must also complete the following courses in order to meet PA Chapter 49 Regulations effective for any candidate applying for a PA instructional and/or educational specialist certificate on or after 2011.

Due to PA regulations CalU mandates the following: (a) at least 9 credits of special education/ accommodations and adaptations for students with disabilities in an inclusive setting and (b) at least 3 credits addressing instructional needs of English language learners.

ESP 701   Intro to Behavioral Analysis- 3 credits

ESP 610 Foundations and Collaboration- 3 credits


EDE 704   Introduction to Teaching English as a Second Language- 3 credits or EDE 709 Developing Cultural Awareness & Sensitivity- 3 credits

Note: If equivalent coursework at the undergraduate level has been completed, the candidate may request a course listed above to be waived that is equivalent to the graduate level course.  The program coordinator will review transcripts, course syllabi, etc. to determine whether coursework is equivalent.  The program coordinator has the sole discretion to accept or deny any equivalency requests.  If a course is determined to be equivalent additional coursework may need to be taken to fulfill the 24 credit certification-only requirements for the program.
