Career Opportunities

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job prospects for early childhood and elementary school teachers are expected to be favorable, with particularly good prospects for teachers in high-demand fields such as math, science and bilingual education, or in less desirable urban or rural school districts.

Employment of school teachers is expected to grow by 12% between 2006 and 2016, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Through 2016, overall student enrollments in elementary, middle and secondary schools-a key factor in the demand for teachers-are expected to rise more slowly than in the past as children of the baby boom generation leave the school system. This will cause employment of teachers from kindergarten through the secondary grades to grow as fast as the average.

The career outlook for future teachers also looks bright for those students interested in a professional career in early childhood and elementary education. Career prospects for the education services graduates are encouraging; potential employers include adoption agencies, tutorial learning organizations, community recreation centers, camps, publishers, school service supply companies and child abuse centers. Students with undergraduate degrees in these fields are also prepared to pursue advanced study in a variety of disciplines.

Cal U prepares you to enter the workforce with knowledge, integrity, character and experience. With the help of the Career and Professional Development Center, we'll connect you to potential employers through networking events, job shadowing opportunities, on-campus recruiting, job and internship fairs, and organizational visits.
