Earth Science: Internships and Careers

We strongly encourage and support our students in efforts to seek internships. Students typically seek internships during the summer between their sophomore and junior or junior and senior years. An internship is designed to provide you with the opportunity to apply classroom theory to realistic, professional-level situations. It's intended to give you a concentrated practical experience at a progressive agency or organization.  The concepts and experiences acquired in the classroom are honed and fine-tuned at this level to prepare you for your career undertaking.

Each summer, many institutions around the country offer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs. Many of these programs provide valuable opportunities to explore research and get a taste of what graduate school might be like.  Many of these programs also offer housing and a summer stipend. The National Science Foundation (NSF) Directory of Summer REU has further information.

Graduates of the earth science program have successfully entered the workforce and graduate schools throughout the country.  Some of the graduate schools our students have attended to pursue further education include Kent State University, Akron University, Eastern Kentucky University, West Virginia University, the University of Pittsburgh, the South Dakota School of Mines, Indiana State University, Mississippi State University, the University of Florida, Texas Tech University, the University of Arizona and New Mexico State University.

Our graduates are now employed in diverse positions such as consultants, information specialists, demographers and cartographers. Many work as geologists, environmental engineers and environmentalists, and hold supervisory or managerial positions. Others work as regional, county and city planners and governmental agents. Many of our graduates have risen to supervisory positions, and a few have started and maintained their own successful companies.

Cal U prepares you to enter the workforce with knowledge, integrity, character and experience. With the help of the Career and Professional Development Center, we'll connect you to potential employers through networking events, job shadowing opportunities, on-campus recruiting, job and internship fairs, and organizational visits.
