What to wear to a college open house

Determining what to wear to a college open house can be a daunting task, especially if it is your first visit to our campus. You may be unaware of the campus culture, including how formal or informal students may dress. Let our guide help you as you get ready to attend a PennWest California Open House.

Why What You Wear is Important

Determining what to wear to a college open house can be a daunting task, especially if it is your first visit to our campus. You may be unaware of the campus culture, including how formal or informal students may dress.

At PennWest California, we value your individualism and want you to be comfortable during your tour and OpenHouse. In general, casual clothing that ensures your appearance is tidy and modest is recommended. Remember, this could be the first impression you make to future classmates or professors!

Dress for the Weather

PennWest California’s Open House includes a customized tour of campus, so you will want to keep your eye on the weather forecast for that day.

“We give tours during Open House rain or shine,” says Tracey Sheetz, Dean of Admissions at PennWest California. “We can alter the tour based on the weather, but we really want to show you places on campus that meet your interests.”

“That may mean having to brave a rainy day for you to see chemistry labs, or our professional golf management facility.”

Your tour of campus may last for an hour or more, so be prepared to be outside while walking between buildings. Jackets on cool or rainy days are a good idea, and a pair of comfortable shoes is a must. Leave the flip-flops at home!

Dress Comfortably, but Avoid the Sweats

Besides from going on a campus tour, you will be talking with representatives from Admissions, Financial Aid, Housing and many more offices in a “marketplace” setting. You also will receive a welcome from President Geraldine M. Jones and grabbing lunch on campus.

With all these activities, you are going to be moving around a lot and making many first impressions. It’s a good idea to be comfortable during your visit and wear casual clothing that represents you in a positive light. Acceptable casual attire includes:

  • Nice T-shirts
  • Button-downs
  • Polos
  • Khaki shorts/pants or a nice pari of jeans
  • Cargo or Bermuda shorts.

Be sure your attire is tidy and appropriate. Here are some options to avoid:
