Issue Expo Takes a Knee on Oct. 9

Cal U’s chapter of the American Democracy Project will host an Issue Expo titled “Taking the Knee” at 11 a.m. on Oct. 9 in Eberly Hall, Room 110.

Dr. Melanie Blumberg, Dr. Michael Slaven, Dr. Sean Madden, all of the Department of History, Politics, Society and Law, and Dr. Ayanna Lyles, of the Department of Health Science, will be joined on the panel by politically active students Shaheed Ansari and Brandon Wright.

Serving as moderator will be Dr. Kelton Edmonds, director of the Frederick Douglass Institute and a professor in the Department of History, Politics, Society and Law.

The event will look into the issue of American professional football player Colin Kaepernick who started the “take a knee” national anthem protest against police brutality and has been named as the new face of Nike’s “Just Do It” campaign for its 30th anniversary.

Kaepernick remains a free agent without a team at present, however, as the NFL appears reluctant to endorse his controversial gesture.

The event is free and open to the Cal U community and public.
