The Center for Volunteer Programs and Service Learning will honor the Oct. 9 birthday of Elizabeth “Jennie” Adams Carter, Cal U’s first African-American graduate (1881) with a day of service.

From 5-6:30 p.m., in the Carter Hall Multipurpose Room, students will create dinosaur-themed treat bags, which will be given to children in local homeless shelters through Beverly’s Birthdays. Members of the campus community and public are also welcome.

Beverly’s Birthdays, a non-profit organization, currently partners with agencies across the Pittsburgh region to provide birthday celebrations for homeless and low-income children.

The VPSL will also be accepting donations through Oct. 10 for the Birthday in a Bag project, which also benefits needy children.

Individual or team, club, organization or office donations are welcome and can be dropped off in Natali Student Center Room 119.

Donated items can include a cake mix, frosting, plates, cups, napkins, party hats, candles, etc.
