The interview process for victims, witnesses and suspects rests on more than just the contact in the interview setting. Preparation for utilizing this process successfully begins with an accurate analysis and assessment of the crime and crime scene, a well founded knowledge of criminal behavior and the identification of offender vulnerabilities and weaknesses as transferred from the offender to the development of the crime and thereby left at the crime scene. The end result of the analytical process and determination of offender type is the outline for the most effective approach to the interview process focused on the individual suspect and his vulnerabilities. This preparation and process is presented in detail and leads to the presentation of the Targeted Suspect Interview. As a foundation for the most effective interviewing a portion of this course will delve into the criminal mind of the violent or sexually violent offender in order to more successfully structure interviews and interrogations.

This course examines homicides, sexual homicides which can be examples of horrific violence inflicted by one person on another. When such events occur, the pressure to solve them is often monumental. That pressure has sometimes resulted in a "rush to judgment," ending in the true offender going free and officers and prosecutors being embarrassed. In this course we will examine how to avoid investigative error. Cutting edge investigative skills are provided for the on-the-spot investigator and supervisor to improve the overall assessment and guidance of routine and high profile cases. The discovery of the offender's motivation by exploring his behaviors left at the crime scene provides the foundation for moving an investigation to a successful conclusion.

Topics Discussed:

  • Principles of Violent Crime Analysis
  • Anatomy & Physiology of Death and Wound Identification
  • Victimology
  • Crime Scenes
  • Motivations As Expressed Through M.O. and Individualized Behaviors
  • Crime Scene Staging
  • Homicide Scene Reconstruction
