The interview process for victims, witnesses and suspects rests on more than just the contact in the interview setting. Preparation for utilizing this process successfully begins with an accurate analysis and assessment of the crime and crime scene, a well founded knowledge of criminal behavior and the identification of offender vulnerabilities and weaknesses as transferred from the offender to the development of the crime and thereby left at the crime scene. The end result of the analytical process and determination of offender type is the outline for the most effective approach to the interview process focused on the individual suspect and his vulnerabilities. This preparation and process is presented in detail and leads to the presentation of the Targeted Suspect Interview. As a foundation for the most effective interviewing a portion of this course will delve into the criminal mind of the violent or sexually violent offender in order to more successfully structure interviews and interrogations.

False allegations of rape are being more widely reported in the media and students will be acquainted with the primary motivations underlying false reporting and those factors consistent with false allegations.

Will the rapist escalate in violence? Are there valid predictors of such escalation? When do fantasies of rape begin? What triggers rape behavior? Why does rape sometimes escalate to homicide?
