Cal U is now operating at Level 4.

Cal U expects to operate at Level 3 for the Spring 2021 semester.

PURPOSE 

This document summarizes key changes being made at Cal U in preparation for reopening the campus to faculty, staff and students, and it serves as a guide to precautionary measures designed to help prevent the spread of illness at the University.

This document is not intended to be a comprehensive summary of all University plans, policies and procedures.

This is a “living document” that will be updated and amended in response to changing conditions. Portions of this guide were designed based on the Phase 2 recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control, the KUALI “Higher Ed Return to Campus Guide” checklist, and guidance from state and federal government agencies, including the state Department of Education.

ASSUMPTIONS AND LEVELS

The health, safety and well-being of Cal U students, faculty and staff is paramount. Guided by federal and state authorities including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Pennsylvania Department of Health, senior leadership at California University of Pennsylvania will determine the Level at which the University will operate. The Level may change in response to conditions on campus and in the broader community. 

Level 1: Classes meet and employees work as they did prior to the pandemic, with minimal adjustments to prevent the spread of disease. Regular handwashing and “cough and sneeze etiquette” are encouraged. Note: Cal U is unlikely to return to Level 1 until a COVID-19 vaccine is available or the coronavirus is eradicated.

Level 2: Classes meet primarily in person, with enhanced health and safety measures strongly encouraged, including face coverings and social distancing in all classrooms, common spaces and other indoor areas on campus. Residence hall are open. Nearly all employees work on campus. 

Level 3: Labs, studio and performance courses, and other classes requiring hands-on learning meet in person; most other courses are delivered through real-time remote learning or online instruction. Face coverings and social distancing are required in all Cal U buildings and public areas where 6-foot social distancing cannot be maintained. Residence halls are open. Telework schedules are permitted for employees.

Level 4: Residence halls close. The University fulfills its educational mission through remote learning and online instruction; all but essential life- and facility-sustaining personnel work remotely. 

Cal U will operate at Level 3 for the Spring 2021 semester, conditions permitting.

Note: At Levels 1-3, this plan assumes that Washington County remains in the “green” or “yellow” phase of the governor’s Phased Reopening and Recovery Plan. If the governor moves Washington County to the “red” phase, Cal U would be required to suspend all in-person classes and campus activities, except for life- and facility-sustaining operations (Level 4).

ACADEMIC CALENDAR

Cal U has adjusted its academic calendar.

Level 1-4

Cal U has adjusted its academic calendar for the Spring 2021 semester.

Classes start on January 25. There is no spring break. 

Classes end April 30. Final exams will be held May 3-7.

This schedule applies for all classes, whether they are offered in person, online or through real-time remote technology. See the complete Academic Calendar

 

ACADEMICS 

Student Resources for Remote Learning

Level 1-4

Cal U is working to ensure that all students are prepared to take advantage of online instruction and succeed in a remote learning environment.

  • The Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) will offer workshops designed to foster success for students engaged in online and/or real-time remote learning. Workshops are available this summer and will continue once the fall semester begins.
  • The Office of Academic Success will conduct a series of workshops to help students adjust to the online learning environment. More information will be available in Starfish, Cal U’s online communication tool.
  • The Vulcan Learning Commons (VLC) will offer free academic support services, including online tutoring sessions via Zoom, to provide training and academic support for students. VLC peer assistants work with Cal U students on reading, writing and speaking skills, as well as course-specific content.
  • Cal U has partnered with Pearson’s Smarthinking, an online tutoring provider. This partnership allows Cal U students to request and receive free online assistance and writing reviews from Smarthinking tutors on a 24/7 basis.

Faculty Training for Remote Teaching

Level 1-4

In order to provide a high-quality learning experience in a virtual environment, faculty are required to complete Cal U’s D2L/Brightspace training course, as well as training in Zoom videoconferencing and Mediasite video streaming software. Faculty also have access to additional workshops focused on the delivery of blended (in-person and remote) learning.

Faculty in the Eberly College of Science and Technology have completed Online Science Mastery courses, learning best practices in the design and implementation of virtual science labs in the online classroom.

Cal U’s Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) and University Technology Services (UTech) are available to provide individual consultation and professional development to faculty members.

Grading Policy

Level 1-4

The University’s Pass/No Credit policy will NOT be in effect for the Spring 2021 semester.

Respondus Lockdown Browser

Level 1-4

To maintain the integrity of online testing and the value of a Cal U degree, students may be required to use the Respondus Lockdown Browser when taking major exams. More information will be provided later in the semester. 

Course Delivery

NOTE: At all levels, students enrolled in academic programs through Cal U Global Online will continue their 100% online coursework as scheduled.

Level 1

All classes will meet as they did prior to the pandemic, with minimal adjustment to prevent the spread of disease. Regular handwashing and “cough and sneeze etiquette” are encouraged.

Level 2

On-campus classes will meet primarily in person, with enhanced health and safety measures strongly encouraged, including face coverings and social distancing in all classrooms.

Level 3

Cal U anticipates that about 50% of on-campus classes will continue to be conducted in person. These primarily would be face-to-face labs, studio and performance courses, and courses that require facilities and equipment available only on campus.

Students can view the status of their classes at vip.calu.edu. Some course sections may be identified as “Remote Learning.” With remote learning, faculty deliver instruction in real time (synchronously) while some or all students participate in the class via Zoom or similar technology. The faculty also may deliver the instruction from a remote location. Remote learning classes are synchronous, meaning that the faculty and students meet at the assigned time and day.

In VIP, remote learning sections will be coded with an “R” in the section identifier. For example, course ABC-100-002 would be coded as ABC-100-R02. Faculty will be notified of these changes. Remote learning courses meet at a specified day and time. Online classes are identified with either “G” or “W” as the first character in the section code. Online classes are asynchronous (you complete assignments on your own schedule) and delivered through D2L/Brightspace.

NOTE: Some in-person courses may transition to online or remote learning if University officials deem it necessary to maintain campus safety. Students will be notified via campus email about any changes in course delivery or class schedules. Faculty also will be notified of these changes.

Level 4

For the health and safety of our faculty and students, Cal U will move all courses – including labs, studio and performance courses – to  real-time remote learning or online instruction.

  • Cal U Global Online programs will continue to be offered 100% online.
  • To maintain the value of a Cal U degree, the Verification of Student Identity Policy will be in effect for all real-time remote, blended and online programs.

Library Services 

Level 1

Manderino Library will be open as it was prior to the pandemic, with adjustments to prevent the spread of disease.

Level 2-3

Manderino Library will be open, with social distancing in place. Sanitation stations will be placed in high-touch areas, so students can wipe down keyboards and other surfaces before and after use.

The circulation department will be loaning books and other materials; however, book stacks will be closed to faculty, staff and students. Visits to the University Archives will be by appointment only.

Requests for materials can be made online here. Borrowers should allow 24 hours for the material to be available for pickup or curbside delivery. Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery will function as usual.

Computer lab spaces in the library will be reduced to no more than 50% capacity. Hand sanitizer stations will be installed, and users are encouraged to sanitize keyboards and other surfaces before and after use.

Private research carrels will still be accessible 8 a.m.-4 p.m. daily.

Library faculty will be available for virtual consultation with students.  Appointments can be scheduled on the library’s appointment website.

Level 4

Manderino Library will remain open on virtual basis. No-contact curbside pickup will be provided so students, faculty and staff can borrow materials (books, DVDs, realia/teaching aids, etc.) without leaving their vehicles. Library faculty will be available for virtual consultation with students.

Books and Learning Technology

Level 1

The Cal U Bookstore in the Natali Student Center will be open as it was prior to the pandemic, with adjustments to prevent the spread of disease.

UTech Services will provide Helpdesk services; for assistance, contact utechrequests@calu.edu (preferred) or phone 724-938-5911.

Level 2-3

The Cal U Bookstore in the Natali Student Center will be open.

  • Social distancing guidelines will be in place, with visual cues such as floor stickers and signage.
  • Plexiglas shields will be in place at registers.
  • Students are encouraged to order online and utilize the bookstore’s shipping option.
  • Special in-store hours may be in effect to separate online order pick-up and in-store shopping. 

In addition to Helpdesk services, University Technology Services (UTech) will have a limited number of laptops that can be borrowed for short-term use. To request a “loaner” laptop, email eichelberger@calu.edu.

Level 4

Cal U Bookstore will be closed on campus. Students will have access to bookstore products and services online.

Commencement

Earning an academic degree program is a noteworthy achievement, and Cal U recognizes the value of a meaningful, in-person ceremony that honors and celebrates our graduates.

Ceremonies typically are held twice a year, at the close of the spring and fall semesters (May and December). Students graduating in August are invited to participate in December ceremonies, and January graduates are invited to participate in May. 

Cal U will hold Commencement ceremonies appropriate to the University’s operational level:

Level 1

The University will host traditional, face-to-face ceremonies for graduates, families and friends. Ceremonies will be held within the semester (fall or spring) in which the student is expected to graduate.

Level 2

Cal U will host modified, socially distanced ceremonies within the semester (fall or spring) in which the student is expected to graduate.

  • Ceremonies may be organized by College or degree program to reduce the number of attendees at each event.
  • Graduates may be permitted to invite only a limited number of guests.
  • All attendees may be expected to wear face coverings and follow social distancing requirements.
Level 3

Cal U will host modified, socially distanced ceremonies within the semester (fall or spring) in which the student is expected to graduate. Graduates who choose not to attend may be invited to participate in a future in-person Commencement.

  • Ceremonies may be organized by College or degree program to reduce the number of attendees at each event.
  • Ceremonies may be limited to graduates and University personnel only (no guests).
  • All attendees will be required to wear face coverings and follow social distancing requirements.
Level 4

Ceremonies will be postponed. Graduates will be invited to attend in-person ceremonies when the University is operating at Level 3 or higher.

ATHLETICS 

At the direction of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), all intercollegiate sports competition at Cal U has been suspended for the Fall 2020 semester. Read the PSAC news release.

Information about athletics in Spring 2021 will be provided when available.

CAMPUS DINING SERVICES 

Level 2-3

The Gold Rush and other dining facilities in the Natali Student Center will be reconfigured to promote social distancing.

To avoid congestion, the Gold Rush will be open continuously throughout the day: from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Dining services initially will be limited to counter service, rather than buffet-style service.

Diners should use hand sanitizer before entry, and they must follow guidance regarding traffic flow and social distancing as indicated by signage and other visual cues (e.g., floor markers, taped-off areas, etc.).

Level 4

Dining services will be suspended while the University is operating remotely.

CAMPUS HOUSING AND VULCAN VILLAGE 

Residence Halls

NOTE: Move-in to campus residence halls will occur by appointment only. Arrivals will be scheduled to relieve congestion in the residence halls. At Levels 1-3, masks may be required and social distancing guidelines may be in effect. University Housing will contact students regarding appointments and move-in procedures.

Level 1

All room configurations will be available in on-campus residence halls. Roommates will be assigned as usual and are not considered a “family unit.”

Visitation will be allowed in the residence halls.

Level 2

A variety of room configurations will be available in on-campus residence halls, including single and double rooms. Roommates will be considered a “family unit” and are expected to behave in ways that protect each other’s health.

Social distancing will be required for all meetings within the halls. Virtual meetings are encouraged. Some common areas of the residential facilities may be closed. Residents agree to follow occupancy restrictions and closure signage throughout all residential facilities.

Residents may contact their Community Assistant (CA) to schedule use of lounge and/or kitchen areas. Students are expected to use disinfectant wipes to clean these areas after use.    

There will be no visitation in the residence halls. (Students should contact the Housing Office if parents wish to schedule a visit.)

Level 3

With limited exceptions, students will be housed singly (one student per bedroom/bathroom).

Social distancing will be required for all meetings within the halls. Virtual meetings are encouraged. Some common areas of the residential facilities may be closed. Residents agree to follow occupancy restrictions and closure signage throughout all residential facilities.

Residents may contact their Community Assistant (CA) to schedule use of lounge and/or kitchen areas. Students are expected to use disinfectant wipes to clean these areas after use.    

There will be no visitation in the residence halls. (Students should contact the Housing Office if parents wish to schedule a visit.)

Level 4

Residence halls will be closed. All students with rooms in the residence halls will be asked to remove their belongings. Additional information will be provided by Residence Life.

Vulcan Village

Vulcan Village is owned by the nonprofit Student Association Inc. For information about fall semester plans, phone Vulcan Village at 724-938-8990. 

Students who wish to cancel their lease should contact Vulcan Village. 

FINANCIAL ADJUSTMENTS: TUITION AND FEES

Tuition

Level 1-4

Cal U will deliver high-quality coursework whether classes meet in person or via technology. Should the University move to remote learning/online  instruction because of the COVID-19 pandemic, students can expect to achieve equivalent learning outcomes and earn the same credits as they would in face-to-face courses.

For this reason, tuition at Cal U will not be reduced or refunded should the University shift from in-person to online/remote instruction.

Grants and scholarships will not be reduced. 

Student Fees

Level 1-4

The University maintains its facilities and provides high-quality education and a variety of student services whether it is operating within an in-person, blended or remote learning environment.

These fees are NOT refundable:

  • Academic Support Fee: Supplements tuition to meet the cost of educational supplies and equipment for academic programs, including supplies/equipment used to deliver courses remotely.
  • Lab/Private Instruction Fee: Applies to specific labs or private instruction, such as art, science and health science labs and private music lessons.
  • Special Program Fee: Applies to specialized programs such as the School of Radiologic Technology at Washington Hospital.
  • Technology Fee: Supplements other University resources to cover costs for instructional technology and enhance student access to learning technology.
  • University Service Fee: Covers costs for health services, the Counseling Center and the Career and Professional Development Center, including services provided remotely.
Level 2-4

These fees will be reduced by 50% if the University moves to full or partial remote operations:

  • Herron Recreation and Fitness Center Fee: Covers the cost of renovating Herron recreation center, a project approved by student referendum. Under a policy of the Board of Governors for Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), these costs are to be paid by students. ($79 savings*)
  • Herron Recreation and Fitness Center Operations and Maintenance Fee: Covers operational and maintenance costs for the Herron recreation center, a project approved by student referendum. Under a policy of the PASSHE Board of Governors, these costs are to be paid by students. ($13.50 savings*)
  • Student Union Building Fee: Covers the cost of renovating and expanding the Natali Student Union, a project approved by student referendum. Under a policy of the PASSHE Board of Governors, these costs are to be paid by students. ($74 savings*)
  • Student Center Operations and Maintenance Fee: Covers operational and maintenance costs for the Natali Student Center, a project approved by student referendum. Under a policy of the PASSHE Board of Governors, these costs are to be paid by students. ($88 savings*)

* For students with 12 or more credits. Students enrolled for 1-11 credits pay per-credit.

At Level 3, the Transportation Fee covers the cost of shuttle service between the main campus and Vulcan Village, as well as free student parking on campus. A parking permit is required, and students must park in their assigned lot.

Level 4

As approved by the University’s Council of Trustees, the Student Association Fee will be reduced to $140 should all University instruction and activities be conducted remotely this fall. The reduced rate supports services provided virtually while in-person activities are suspended. A pro-rated portion of the standard on-campus fee ($300 less the $140 remote rate) will be refunded if the University shifts from in-person to entirely remote operations during the semester. 

The University recognizes that some services for on-campus students (those enrolled in programs other than Global Online) will not be provided should Cal U shift entirely to remote operations before or during the fall semester. Should that occur, eligible students WILL receive pro-rated refunds for unused portions of these fees:

  • Dining Fee: Covers meal plans.
  • Housing Fee: Covers housing in on-campus residence halls only.
  • Parking Fee: Covers student parking.
  • Transportation Fee: Covers costs for the Vulcan Flyer shuttle service.

Vulcan Village

Level 1-4

Vulcan Village is owned by the nonprofit Student Association Inc. For information about fall semester plans, phone Vulcan Village at 724-938-8990.

Students who wish to cancel their lease should contact Vulcan Village.

COMMUNICATIONS 

Level 1-4

The website calu.edu/coronaplan will serve as a hub for official information about the University’s pandemic response and plans for the fall semester.

A banner at the top of the Cal U homepage (calu.edu) will direct users to this webpage, which includes important information and periodic updates for students, faculty and staff. Along with other information, messages from the President’s Office and other key areas will be available on this page, which is accessible to the public.

Additional information will be shared regularly with the campus community using a variety of channels. Campus email is the primary mode of communication with all students, faculty and staff. Other channels include, but are not limited to:

  • Online news site (calu.edu/news)
  • FAQ webpages
  • Social media platforms
  • Daily Announcements
  • Alumni e-blasts and e-newsletter
  • Parent/family e-newsletter
  • D2L and VIP (for current students)
  • Slate (for prospective students)
  • Digital signs on campus

COVID-19 cases

Level 2-4

To keep the Cal U community informed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the communications team will maintain a webpage providing current information about campus cases of COVID-19 that have been self-reported to the University. No personally identifying information will be provided. The page will be accessible through a link on the calu.edu/coronaplan page.

Alumni communications

Level 1-4

The Office of University Development and Alumni Relations will communicate with alumni, donors and University friends utilizing the Cal U Alumni social media accounts, e-blasts, the alumni website (calu.edu/alumni) and personalized communication between prospect managers and their donors.

EVENTS 

Level 1-3

Cal U will develop guidelines for on-campus and game-day events based on information from federal and state authorities and public health experts at the CDC, state Department of Health and other agencies.

  • Cal U reserves the right to deny, cancel, postpone or re-locate on-campus and off-campus University events based on health and safety considerations.
  • Cal U will not accept reservations from non-University clients or for events with non-University attendees during the Fall 2020 or Spring 2021 semesters.

Level 2-3
  • Some events may be held virtually; attendance at others may be limited to enable social distancing.
  • Masks and hand sanitizing may be required at events; participants will be notified about any health and safety measures required.
  • Food service at events may be limited to prepackaged or takeout-style items only.
  • Wherever possible, the University will utilize prepaid, hands-free or cashless payment systems to collect admission fees.
  • Events of more than 25 people will not be permitted. Events with 25 people or fewer warrant special precautions, such as:
    • Placing hand-sanitizing dispensers at venue entrances.
    • Installing signs and other visual cues to encourage social distancing in tickets lines, restrooms and food lines.
Level 4

All events will be held virtually, postponed or cancelled.

FITNESS CENTER 

Level 1

The Herron Recreation and Fitness Center will be open, including the climbing wall, pool, hot tub and shower areas. Lockers and rental services will be available.

Adjustments may be made in some areas to enhance user health and safety.

Level 2-3

The Herron Recreation and Fitness will be open.

Certain exercise equipment may be taken out of service to allow for greater social distancing while exercising. The Herron pool and hot tub area, as well as the climbing wall, will be closed.

Students may rent equipment for outdoor recreation, such as road bikes and disc golf equipment. Guides to bike trails and hiking trails will be available to encourage outdoor activity.

Face coverings and social distancing will be required in the fitness center; users must swipe in and out with their CalCards.

Visitors should bring their own water bottles, towels, etc. and should not share these items.

Lockers will be assigned for a full semester only. Showers will be open by appointment only.

Disinfectant will be provided; users are expected to wipe down equipment before and after use. Custodial staff will thoroughly clean the facility on a regular schedule.

Level 4

Indoor recreation, health and wellness facilities will be closed on campus.

Virtual Group Fitness Workouts will be available via YouTube and other media outlets. Virtual Group Fitness challenges for prizes (Virtual 5K, Vulcan Wellness Challenge, etc.) also will be held.

eSports Tournaments will be held virtually.

Equipment rental will be suspended.

HEALTH AND SAFETY 

Coordinating with Public Health Officials

Level 1-3

Cal U will partner with Mon Valley Hospital and other regional facilities to assure that COVID-19 testing is available for students who report to the campus Health Center with symptoms consistent with coronavirus infection.

The University is coordinating its pandemic response with Washington County Emergency Management; Cal U requests guidance and reports information as required to the state Department of Health.

Level 4

The University will coordinate with public health officials as needed.

Self-Assessment App

Level 2-3

All students, faculty and staff are expected to Cal U’s self-assessment and entry badge app from 911Cellular in order to mitigate risk to the campus community.

Individuals whose self-check indicates potential exposure to COVID-19 will receive instructions for follow-up care via the app. Those with satisfactory answers will receive a time-sensitive badge that can be used to gain entry to residence halls, classrooms, common areas, offices, workspaces and other locations on campus.

The app does not store users’ personal information. More details, including instructions for downloading and using the app, will be provided before the start of spring classes.

Personal Responsibility

Level 1-4

Students and employees have a responsibility to safeguard their own health and the health of others. This includes following CDC, state Department of Health and University guidelines:

  • Stay home if you feel sick, and avoid close contact with people who are ill.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use alcohol-based sanitizer.
  • Cough or sneeze into a tissue, or into your elbow (not your hands). Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth to reduce the spread of droplets that can carry disease (Level 2-4).

Cleaning and Disinfecting

Level 1-4

Cal U is committed to implementing enhanced cleaning measures campus-wide. Individuals can assist by washing hands or using hand sanitizer frequently, properly disposing of trash, and utilizing cleaner or disinfecting wipes to clean high-touch areas after using shared equipment (e.g., keyboards, touchscreens, fitness equipment) or common areas.

  • Custodial Services will continue to utilize a hospital-grade disinfectant for cleaning. This is a longstanding practice at Cal U.
  • Custodial Services will emphasize cleaning of high-touch points, such as door handles, elevator buttons, water fountain handles, handrails, microwave buttons, light switches and faucets.
  • Key locations such as restrooms, athletics areas, the fitness center and dining areas will be sanitized regularly using a disinfectant sprayer or misting machine.
  • Hand-sanitizer dispensers have been strategically located throughout campus. Facilities Management staff will monitor and refill dispensers as needed.
  • Disinfectant solutions will be available in break rooms so individuals can wipe down countertops, tables and appliances after use.
  • To prevent the spread of illness, paper products for hand drying will be provided in restrooms with faucet handles or egress doors. Individuals are encouraged to use a paper towel as a protective barrier to shut off the tap and open the door to exit the restroom.
  • Signage in restrooms, common areas, hand-sanitizing stations and vending areas will encourage proper hand washing/sanitizing and cough/sneeze etiquette. Signage and visual cues in areas where lines typically form (e.g., ATM machines, checkout lines, dining areas) will encourage social distancing.
  • Employees should continue to follow health and safety guidelines even when campus is operating with essential personnel only. 

Counseling Center Operations

Level 1

The Counseling Center offers in-person counseling and other services to support students’ mental health and well-being.

Level 2-3

The Counseling Center offers services to support students’ mental health and well-being. Tele-counseling services will be available to residents of Pennsylvania and other approved locations. Patient privacy will be a primary consideration during tele-counseling sessions.

In-person counseling will be limited to emergencies and situations where tele-counseling is not effective or the patient does not have access to necessary technology.

Couch/chair covers will be wiped down between in-person sessions.

Level 4

The Counseling Center will continue to offer services to support eligible students’ mental health and well-being. Tele-counseling services will be available to residents of Pennsylvania and other approved locations. Patient privacy will be a primary consideration during tele-counseling sessions.

Health Center Operations

Level 1

The Student Health Center responds to students’ health and wellness needs. Students may walk in or call ahead (724-938-4232) to speak with staff before visiting the Health Center.

Level 2-3

The Student Health Center responds to students’ health and wellness needs. Students must call ahead (724-938-4232) before visiting the Health Center unless they are experiencing an emergency such as respiratory distress or an injury with profuse bleeding.

  • Health Center staff will determine whether tele-medicine services can be utilized, or if an in-person visit to the Health Center is warranted. Special arrangements will be made for students showing symptoms of an infectious nature.
  • Students advised to report to the Health Center will be instructed on which door to use. Patients with general medical issues will use the front door; those with COVID-19 symptoms will be directed to a separate entrance.
  • Health Center workers will use respiratory protection when encountering patients showing signs of infectious disease.
  • All students will be required to use hand sanitizer when entering and leaving the Health Center. Patients in waiting areas will wear masks and be seated 6 feet apart.
  • An isolation area has been established for students who are diagnosed with COVID-19 or who have been exposed to coronavirus and directed to quarantine. Health Center staff will follow current protocols for testing.
Level 4

Students should call the Health Center (724-938-4232) unless they are experiencing an emergency such as respiratory distress or an injury with profuse bleeding. Health Center staff will determine whether tele-medicine services can be utilized or if the student should seek alternative in-person care.

Students who wish to receive allergy, B12 or Depo-Provera (birth control) injections at the Health Center may schedule an appointment to arrange or continue those injections. All students will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms before they are permitted to visit the Health Center. Students receiving allergy serum must receive the first injection from each new vial from their allergist or other medical provider.

Testing, Case Investigation and Quarantine

Level 1-3

Cal U will follow state Department of Health guidelines for testing, case investigation ("contact tracing") and quarantine.

Employees with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 will be sent home and referred to their medical providers.

Students who visit the Health Center with COVID-19 symptoms will be referred for testing.

If a student is suspected of having COVID-19 symptoms:

  • Unless a resident student chooses to return home and can do so safely, they will be instructed to self-isolate in a designated area on campus and the Health Center will monitor their condition.
  • While a resident student is in isolation, University Housing staff will arrange for food delivery and address other needs. Students who are self-isolating in local off-campus housing may contact the director of Student Wellness Support Services to request support.
  • Linens in designated on-campus quarantine rooms will be professionally laundered.


If a student is identified through case investigation as having close contact with someone infected with coronavirus:

  • Unless a resident student chooses to return home and can do so safely, they will be instructed to quarantine in a designated area on campus and the Health Center will monitor their condition. Students who live off-campus will be instructed to quarantine in their residence.
  • While a resident student is in quarantine, University Housing staff will arrange for food delivery and address other needs. Students quarantined in local off-campus housing may contact the director of Student Wellness Support Services to request support. Students who are feeling well may continue their classes remotely.
  • Linens in designated on-campus quarantine rooms will be professionally laundered.
Level 4

Students will not be in residence on campus during Level 4. Students who feel ill should contact their healthcare provider.

Employees with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 will be sent home and referred to their health care provider.

Case Investigation

Level 1-3

If a member of the Cal U community is diagnosed with COVID-19, case investigation (sometimes called "contact tracing") can help to keep our campus safer by identifying others who may be at risk and directing them to quarantine or obtain medical care.

The state Department of Health will take the lead in case investigation. Campus teams have been identified and trained to support the Health Department as needed.

Level 4

Case investigation can help to keep essential employees safer by identifying individuals who may be at risk and directing them to quarantine or obtain medical care.

The state Department of Health will take the lead in case investigation, with support (as needed) from campus teams trained to provide this support.

MASKS, PPE AND SOCIAL DISTANCING 

Masks / Face Coverings

Level 1

Masks/face coverings are not required on campus. Members of at-risk populations (self-identified) may continue to wear a face covering if they choose.

Level 2-3

Wearing a mask or face covering offers a measure of protection for yourself and others. Until further notice, the requirement for wearing a mask or face covering on campus will be determined by the University, based on expert guidance.

Consistent with the order issued July 1, 2020, by the state Secretary of Health, students and employees must wear cloth face coverings or disposable masks in classrooms, public areas and common spaces; when two or more people are in a vehicle; when riding in an elevator; in high-volume customer service areas; where 6 feet of social distance cannot be consistently maintained; and as directed by management to support those at high risk.

  • Face masks may not include demeaning or derogatory logos; profanity; racist or sexist wording or designs; offensive script; promotion of wrongful drug abuse; or offensive imagery. The mask should fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face and must be worn covering the nose and mouth. The mask should allow for breathing without restriction.
  • The University will provide employees with either a disposable mask or a reusable cloth mask, depending on availability. Employees may provide their own masks. Employees are responsible for laundering the reusable masks supplied to them.
  • Students will be supplied with one branded, washable, reusable mask, or they may provide their own. Students will be responsible for laundering the reusable mask supplied to them.
  • In a limited number of locations (e.g., Health Center, fingerprinting station), the University may have disposable paper masks available.

To mitigate the risk of spreading COVID-19, anyone who refuses to wear a face covering or face shield will be denied access to any and all campus building(s). Any student without a face covering will be removed from class and referred to the Office for Student Conduct. Employees must follow the COVID-19 Social Distancing and Masking Requirements policy.

Students who are unable to wear a face covering because of a medical condition should contact the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSDmail@calu.edu). Employees with a medical condition should contact the Human Resources Office.

Level 4

Masks must be worn by the limited number of essential staff remaining on campus. 

Social Distancing

Level 1

Social distancing is not required on campus. Members of at-risk populations may continue to practice social distancing if they choose.

Level 2-3

Social distancing (sometimes called physical distancing) means keeping space between yourself and other people. The practice can help to stop the spread of disease through respiratory droplets that can carry viruses and other germs, including the coronavirus. The CDC and state Department of Health recommend keeping 6 feet away from others – about two arms’ length – to slow the spread of COVID-19.

For All

  • Individuals should remain 6 feet apart in high-traffic areas including checkout lines, building entrances and exits, interior doorways, ticket booths, ATM lines, etc.
  • No more than three (3) passengers at a time may occupy an elevator. Passengers must wear masks and wash or sanitize their hands after using the elevator. Those who are able should take the stairs whenever possible.

For Students

  • The number of computers in public labs at Noss Hall and Manderino Library will be reduced to create an acceptable distance between users.
  • In-person classes/labs will be held in a space large enough to permit social distancing. Students should check their schedule for class locations.
  • Occupancy limits may be established for spaces such as offices, conference rooms, break rooms, performance areas and common areas.


For Customer Service Staff
Examples of customer service staff include deans and office staff in academic departments, as well as staff in areas such as Admissions, Academic Affairs, Administration and Finance, Academic Records, Articulation and Transfer, Conference Services, Facilities, Financial Aid, Housing and Residence Life, Human Resources, Information Desk, Library Services, Mailroom, Payroll, PSECU, Purchasing, SAI, Student Accounts, Student Affairs, Student Success, University Technology Services (UTech), University Police and the Vulcan Learning Commons.

Customer service areas will:

  • Continue to provide and promote online/remote services, when feasible.
  • Provide social distance cues for high-traffic areas.
  • In key areas where social distancing is not feasible, use “sneeze screens” or plastic barriers to separate staff from visiting students, families and others, or use cubicle-type barriers in areas where privacy is needed.
  • Alternate/stagger staff to enable social distancing and reduce staff.
  • Schedule appointments, when feasible, to keep groups from congregating at customer service windows.

Special procedures may be in effect for high-touch activities such as fingerprinting. These may include required temperature checks, masks and hand sanitizing for visitors; gloves, masks and faced shields for employees; and enhanced cleaning of equipment.

For Maintenance Staff

  • Masks must be worn when two or more employees share a University vehicle. Employees are required to sanitize campus vehicles and carts at the beginning and/or end of each shift.
  • Employees should limit the sharing of tools. Shared tools or other equipment should be wiped with a sanitizing agent before and after use. 
  • Facilities staff must wear gloves when working in a student residence, in the Health Center or in food preparation areas. Custodial staff must wear gloves when using industrial-strength cleaning agents.
  • Where possible, employees should work alone. When this is not feasible, they should follow social distancing guidelines until further notice.
Level 4

All social distancing and personal protective equipment (PPE) policies will apply to the limited number of essential staff remaining on campus.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Level 1-4

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety will manage PPE inventory and order critical PPE supplies (masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, thermometers, etc.).

  • Hand sanitizer will be available in common areas and main-floor elevator lobbies in all buildings.
  • Cleaning stations will be placed in public computer labs (Noss Hall, Manderino Library and residence halls). These stations have cleaning wipes for computers and tables, hand sanitizer and a trash receptacle.
  • Nurses, police officers, selected custodial staff and selected facilities staff will be fit-tested annually with respirator protection to ensure that front-line workers are protected in the event of a disease outbreak, chemical spill or other hazardous incident.

TECHNOLOGY 

Level 1-4

University Technology Services (UTech) will be available to assist students, faculty and staff with technology issues. Email utechrequests@calu.edu or call 724-938-5911 to reach the UTech Helpdesk.

Level 2-3
  • UTech Desktop Services and Helpdesk staff will wear disposable gloves when working on computers, keyboards and other equipment.
  • Staff will wash hands or use hand sanitizer regularly, and use disinfecting wipes to clean surfaces, especially in customer service areas.
  • Staff in customer service areas will wear masks when interacting with students and employees.
  • Students who need to borrow a “loaner” laptop for the Spring 2021 semester may email the UTech Helpdesk (utechrequests@calu.edu) to request an application.
  • Disinfectant will be available at campus print stations.
Level 4
  • UTech staff will remotely support all business and technology functions.
  • UTech personnel will go to campus in the event of hardware failures and critical issues requiring on campus support.
  • Campus will be urged to contact the Helpdesk via utechrequests@calu.edu to enable better request management.
  • Staff technology needs will be reported through the Helpdesk.

TRANSPORTATION 

Vulcan Flyer Shuttles

 Level 1-3

The contractor will follow CDC guidance for public transportation regarding vehicle cleaning, social distancing requirements and rider protection, such as the wearing of face coverings or masks.

Level 4

Vulcan Flyer shuttle service will be suspended. Check Mid Mon Valley Transit for information about bus routes that remain in operation.

University Vehicles

Level 1

Standard (pre-pandemic) policies regarding use of University vehicles are in effect.

Level 2-3

Employees should ride alone in vehicles where operationally feasible if travel is required for work. Employees who normally have multiple employees in the vehicle due to safety or work standards should follow their agency-specific protocols.

  • If a driver is alone throughout the trip, a mask is needed only when interacting with others, such as at a tollbooth or drive-through window. If more than one person is in the vehicle, all occupants should wear masks.
  • Employees do not need to wear a mask if it impedes their vision, if they have a medical condition, or if it would create an unsafe condition in which to operate equipment or execute a task.
  • Employees should limit stops when traveling between their home and worksite. Employees should wash their hands upon arrival at the worksite and prior to departing.

University vehicles will be sanitized daily or between each user, whichever is more frequent. 

The number of back-to-back bookings should be minimized to allow vehicles to be sanitized between uses.

Level 4

Travel in University vehicles is suspended.

UNIVERSITY TRAVEL 

Level 1-3

All travel requests must be approved by the area Vice President and the University President, per the University’s travel policy. Travel approval is subject to change based on changing conditions.

Level 4

No travel will be permitted.

Campus visitors must adhere to all health and safety measures in place throughout the University and its affiliate locations. This includes visitors to locations such as:
