Employment at Cal U's Writing Center

Cal U’s Writing Center offers undergraduates and graduates of any major of study an opportunity to tutor students in academic writing.

Undergraduate Writing Consultant
Undergraduate Writing Center Consultants (tutors) work with undergraduate and graduate students at Cal U to assist them in improving as writers. Working one-to-one—both face-to-face and online—writing consultants and students discuss ways student writers can improve their writing, whether they are working on research papers, essays, or other kinds of academic and professional writing projects. These are work study positions, so consultants must be eligible for work study. Work study positions are for eight hours per week and are paid at the prevailing minimum wage.

The Cal U Writing Center provides a comfortable and professional workplace. We pride ourselves on being very good at what we do – and have a lot of fun while we’re doing it! We don’t expect our new members to be perfect writers or perfect tutors, but we do expect them to be willing to develop their own writing skills and ability to assist other writers. Writing consultants receive formal training that continues throughout their employment. Writing consultants also engage in scholarly activities related to their writing center work that can lead to conference presentations and publications.

Graduate Assistantship
Writing center graduate assistants work directly with the Cal U Writing Center director to ensure the effective operation of the Center and its programs. While there are basic qualifications and duties required by the position, the director of the writing center also acknowledges that each graduate assistant brings with him or her unique qualities and skills.  Therefore, the director will work with graduate assistants to ensure that their experiences in the writing center serve their professional and academic development in productive and meaningful ways. Positions require a commitment of twenty hours per week, and graduate assistants receive a stipend.
